White signified leisure and holidays in the sun in bygone eras. Wearing white in the city wasn't a practice many took on due to the dirtiness. Once you came back from a holiday in Florida and returned to New York or Boston, the white went back into the closet. Hence, "no white after labor day" became a rule.
Nowadays no rules are applied. People walk around in their underwear, ripped up clothing, stained and dirty clothes, and pajamas even in restaurants...
The Fashion Police will put you in jail!
Thanks for MHO!

Supposedly if you can wear white you obviously don't get dirty and there for you do not have a real job... its an old school thing because really workers don't were white.
The answer is within the question.
“Why can’t you?”
Last I knew we can wear what we want when we want.
If someone hates my choice of dress, I could care less at least I’m happy.
I always figured it had something to do with the fact that white garments keep you cooler. They do not absorb heat like dark colors do.
Because it’s not in fashion for the merchants because of the season change and they start selling darker clothes
I wear black every day
