Money. That, because by definition, men, are bigger. They have bigger hips, broader shoulders and are overall just simply bigger than women (with exceptions of course). This then says to designers or clothing makers, uh oh, that means we'll need more material, to fit bigger bodies. So, they say "ya know, we'll just cater to women, instead, that way we'll save money, and jack up the price on it, just to not only rip off the customer, but, just to be an asshole". That's mainly why you see so many more ads towards women, is that they're trying to fool them in to buying clothing, they really shouldn't buy, because it's likely not as high as it actually is.

I think it's money. We could certainly uncondition ourselves to stop thinking that there's gender specific clothing, but, we can't, control the price of clothing, unless of course, we became store owners, ourselves

Money, and gender differences in society. If you have a baby boy you buy boy clothes, if you have another they just get hand-me-downs, but if you have a girl you then need to buy new, girl clothes. That was mostly money. But when you're older it also becomes gender differences: men are seen as plain and strong so they get plain strong clothes, women are seen as delicate and pretty so they get those clothes. Women's clothes are also sexier by default and men's clothes have big pockets because men don't get purses marketed to them.

So money makes it so there is a difference, and stereotypes define what the differences are, mostly.

Basic body shapes between males and females... makes sense to have different clothing. A shirt that fits a man well won't fit the typical female who has breasts. .. makes sense to have male and female shirts/blouses (although I don't understand why shirts and blouses and the buttons on opposite sides). The male waist and hip measurements are very similar while female waist and hip measurements are usually very different, so again, it makes sense to have male and female pants. And would there ever be a reason to have a male bra?
