What makes someone "look like a model"?

What makes someone "look like a model" to you? What is a model-looking person if you see them on the street? Is it just height and being skinny?

Their attitude. I've seen women of all different body types do modelling and their photos come out stunning. Everyone I've seen who did modelling had an air of confidence around them, and you could tell they value their appearance from how they present themselves and how well-groomed they are. To be a good model you also need professionalism because it is a business that gets you public attention and only those with decorum earn respect in the long run plus modeling is a very hectic job where time is essential so being on time, being fast, being able to adjust and adapt, traveling and meeting new people to gain more opportunities are way more important than you think. There are many people who are pretty but can't pull off modeling.

Physically, beautiful and confident people come in all shapes and sizes. I don't think of 'who could be a model who could be not' I think who could be a Sabyasachi model, who could rock a Savage x Fenty campaign, who could be the perfect muse for a certain high fashion designer based on the vibe they give off etc.

You're right. Tall (5'8+ for girls, 6'0+ for guys), skinny, good skin, interesting features. High cheekbones and defined bone structure as well.

Thanks. I feel pretty insecure about the fact I'm a short model. That's why, people keep saying I don't look like one when I tell them my profession. Because I'm not tall I guess.

Height isn’t a highlight when it comes to a woman’s attractiveness but yes indeed it is mandatory for modeling because it’s easier to show a dress.

Beauty overall or someone who looks like a 10, doesn't have to be skinny or tall... at work we have this woman and my god does she have a beautiful ass face!!! She is fat tho but still such a stunning face and she is really beautiful and funny too haha

For women, to be a "fashion model", you need the following when you start:

1. Be between 14-19 years old.

2. Be between 5'9" and 6' tall.

3. Be thin. Really, really thin. Something like 105-115 pounds.

4. Don't have especially large breasts (34C is generally the upper bound of acceptable), lots of stretch marks, tattoos, piercings or highly tanned skin. Dark skin is fine, lots of tan is not fine.

5. Be beautiful. Not necessarily pretty, but beautiful.

6. Have the right personality for it: a strong commitment to modeling , an ability to take rejection, not a lot of modesty (nobody cares what you don't want someone to see, we have a fashion show to put on. . .) and a lot of self confidence.

7. Be willing to relocate to a major market, with New York City strongly preferred.

8. Be willing to travel to strange locations with no friends there to support you, little money, little help, lots of opportunity for both good and bad things to happen to you.

If you have all of that, you have one chance in a hundred of becoming an editorial fashion model.

Thanks for this! I'm not a fashion model, though. Like I would never be booked for runway I know that. I'm signed to a very liberal/diverse agency in London that takes on a lot of plus sized and petite models as well as senior models. But I agree with your points about dedication and travel for sure. You need a strong backbone.

That doesn't apply for Plus models, who can be dress sizes 10-20 or so, depending on the market.

What type of modeling do you do? If you’re a petite or plus sized maybe say that when people ask you so they don’t get confused thinking of a tall thin fashion model. I get it though there seems to be a trend of using ‘very average looking women’ to sell women’s clothing and other products so they are models but they aren’t supposed to look like a model kind of thing I don’t know what that’s called but it’s definitely a thing.

@Mmmariaxc I do commercial and some editorial, mainly. Yes I'm petite, I'm 5'4. I do beauty modelling and some lingerie because you can be petite. I agree, that's why people get confused when I say I'm a model. They say "you don't look like a model though" and it hurt at first but I realise it's probably because of my height. I'm short and skinny.

They are doing that increasingly more and more nowadays. I think it's to appeal to more modern and liberal audiences?

I get that as a compliment frequently. Sometimes people say "why don't you become a model?"
Being a model is all about age, weight and height.
I'm 23 and I'd hate that as a job.
As a compliment it's nice, it makes you think "at least people find me attractive"

I've been told I look like a model a few times.. And usually it's if they are starting off kinda tall and slim or lean, dress in nice fitting clothes, and has a nice but unique face shape usually high cheek bones and a defined jawline.. Full-ish lips also..

What they can model is what they’re wearing at that moment. Their choice of hair style, jewelry, clothes- of a brand or company, or not. Can model a mood of the scenery, crowd, or themselves.

The actual agent classification of a "model" is simply for the girls to be within the size parameters. Looks don't mean much as they will always be under professional level makeup, though she must have a "golden ratio" symmetrical face.

In other words, no one "looks like a model" - it's all subjective. You could be walking by a professional model in her pyjamas and wearing no makeup, but not recognise her.

Skinny and certain facial features. Usually sharper yet more petite features on the face. Ie well defined but smaller nose for example. High and defined cheek bones. There's certainly a model look in the face.
