More for women (guys can answer ) if you have curly / curly frizzy hair do you find it offensive if the hairdressers ask if you want it straightened?

I am "white" per American standards - light blonde, grey eyed, pale skin. I say that as Europeans don't have as much of a hangup. But my ancestry includes Jewish & North African so my hair is actually quite frizzy & curly. In ways, it has a rougher "African" texture.

Anyway each time I go to get my hair cut the hairdresser asks "do you want it straightened". It doesn't matter where I've been in N America and I've lived east to west coast.

You wouldn't so repeatedly or so often hear hairdressers in Europe asking such a question.

So is it the racism of N America (and I'm talking about Canada a subtly & subversively racist country, not the US which is almost proud of its racism) that hairdressers ask?

I mean per North American standards I'm "white" except for my hair. And yet asked such a racially motivated question - straighten my hair & hide the fact I have "non-white" hair.

I wouldn't say its racism or anything, it's just that straight hair is usually found more attractive. Growing up, I always disliked getting my hair straightened but my family did it anyway because curly hair, to them, was messy and ugly.

At least as an adult you can choose not to.

It’s not racism, it’s beauty standards and frizzy hair doesn’t fit that. It’s also easier to cut when it’s not frizzy.
