Is looking professional at work important to you?

I work at a bar myself and three women, myself and two of the girls take pride in looking clean, attractive and appropriately dressed. The third is a slob that comes to work in sweat pants and a hoodie covered in cat hair.

what is your opinion on this, no right or wrong answers I’m just curious.

When I was working, I put a lot effort into dressing professional but cute and also warm because I'm cold all the time lol. The place I worked at, depending on the job title, my coworkers would dress according to their position. CNAs and nurses would wear scrubs. The kitchen staff and janitors would wear casual clothes. Those working at a desk and interacting with customers like myself wore business professional. We were allowed jeans on Fridays but had to pay a dollar and I was too cheap to do that. I wanted every penny I was working hard for lol.

In your case, it seems like you and those two other women are taking your position seriously. You want to make a good impression to your customers as well as your boss and that's admirable. The one that's dressing like a slob, sounds like she doesn't care. The job probably doesn't mean that much to her and she's allowing herself to be lazy. Maybe she doesn't plan on working as a bartender that long.

Regardless, it's definitely important to me to look nice and clean. You're a representative/ambassador of whatever company you're associated with.

Yeah, it is. In most cases I don't care about what others do. Kinda to each their own as long as they don't smell. In the case of your coworker, though, I'd have two concerns. One is the cat hair. I love cats. That would be cool to me. BUT... if you have a customer who's allergic, that customer could have a reaction to the coworker. The other thing is that you folks are customer facing, out in front. I wouldn't want to be in a bar with that coworker -- I'd go elsewhere. So, I'd be concerned if I were you based on whether or not they're driving customers away.

Thanks for your thoughtful reply, I think when you’re in the bar/restaurant industry you should be clean and presentable. I cringe at the thought of someone covered in cat hair serving me.

I would say yea for a couple of reasons.


1. It makes me feel good and confident about myself.


2. It shows your able to be productive and look sharp in a professional manner.


Now that being said I work for a company that is more smart casual which I prefer, not a huge fan of wearing shirt and tie at all times.


So I mostly go to work in some shirt, nice chinos and some nice smart casual boots.

Sorta, I tend to wear the uniform my job gave us, but it's very easy for our uniform to get dirty fast since we're working with food. The cheesecake frosting is the bane of our existence, it can get anywhere and half the time you don't know how it happens. Lol

To an extent, I think one should be able to dress for comfort but also something within the appropriate range of clothes that are worn in the industry they want to work in. For instance, I think a good pair of dark blue jeans can look very nice and is commonly worn in the engineering, manufacturing, construction industries which I’ll be working in as a drafter, and I don’t understand why they are considered unprofessional.

It's very imporant to me but the younger generation don't give a shite. I've seen them wearing ridiculous things in a professional environment. Sweatpants, crop tops, ripped jeans, booty shorts... etc...

Yes. I know they say not to judge a book by its cover, but when I walk into a meeting smartly dressed, i have that much more advantage over the rest because it shows I invest not in myself, but in my organizations image.

Yes I wear a satin blouse and skirt to work everyday and regularly get comments on how professional I look.

Yes. I am not sure about other people but for me it affects how I feel at work. I would be more motivated to do my job efficiently when I dress accordingly.

Maybe she was molested and does not want sexual pursuits and cat calling by men. A normal woman would not dress in bad clothes when it decreases your tips.

2. Being respected by colleagues for being a professional

I personally don't care about it, but you sometimes need to project an image of authority and looking professional helps. Just don't dress better than your boss.

I think we live in a world where the look matters too much, so I try to look professional at work (not to have any issue with my superiors) but not too much

I don’t think I Willa pressure myself to look fancy all the time but just getting dressed for the day will certainly help (for me as a Conga Artist)

Yes it's somewhat important. I have limits as to how professional I can look but I try.
