What kind of personality do you like in a hairstylist?

I tend to like ones that are pretty calm and chill. Sometimes too chatty can exhaust me but I know some people like a chatty stylist.

Authentic ones. Honestly, my barber right now doesn't talk at all. He's a big introvert, and I enjoy the comfortable silence with him. My old barber, was a big talker, and I always enjoyed conversation with her. What irritates me and makes me uncomfortable are disingenuous people. If you're an introvert, don't awkwardly try to perpetuate a conversation you don't want to have with me. If you're an extrovert, don't engage in awkward silences because you don't want to come across as too chatty. Just be yourself. I can vibe with most people. I guess this applies to how I look at most social interactions in general.

I am the same... and I do like the same, which is why I've been going with the same hair stylist for an eternity now, lmao... we're sort of "friends" now, so she knows exactly what I want and need, no much talking and is done as quickly as possible

funny thing is that, through the years, as we became friendly and familiar with other, now we GENUINELY talk about any stuff that comes to mind, lmao... but that's just very different from people that I actually don't know and try to force that chatty-chat situation

I like stylists that are not counting pennies when they care for you. I once had a stylist blow dry my hair for free and style it when I only paid for a hair cut. I could not see what she was doing since I took my glasses off and I did not smile at all cause I had no idea what she was doing and she assumed I hated the hair cut cause I did not smile she so styled it for free to make me happier. She did not colour it since that would cost more but she used some sort of wind device and I looked gorgeous for a few days and even got hit on by a very educated guy after I left the salon.

Know how to cut hair and a scalp massage is wonderful. I think my stylist loves me… She takes a little hair oil or something puts on her two fingers and rubs my temples and then up into my scalp. I’ve had some awesome face massage and peels in Thailand.

I do too and please excuse me as I’m not trying to be crass. Difficulties come with temple and head massage though…. It doesn’t phase them in Thailand…at least I can’t understand them. 👩🏻 ….

I like my barber. We tell each other old jokes. He knows the style I like, and handles it best. Some of the other guys are ok, but he’s my favorite, and I’ve been going to that barber shop for 20 years, and had him as a barber for 15. He retired for a while, and I went with a second guy who is decent, too, but he’s not “my guy.” Lol.


Old Italian barbers - mens men, but not ultra macho or anything. Not ALWAYS talking about the game for thirty minutes. Slightly bawdy jokes or old school jokes or lines or advice about women… not too much talk about work - not too personal or intrusive. 😉

I am not looking to chat much while I get my hair cut. I am not there long to begin with unless it is that time again. I grow my hair out to donate to locks of love. So most of my haircuts are just the top and sides to clean it up while the back grows to 13 inches or more so I can donate it. The "That Time" haircut is when I get it cut off to donate and then everything gets reshaped to look good so I can start all over... The process takes about three years from reshape to reshape...

Like the lame basic way to start a conversation, I hate getting my haircut in silence for the most part unless I am just trying to hurry up and get it over with lol

Ones that don't try to upsell and do the service they're asked to do. It's fine if they say that it's not possible for your type of hair etc but suggest something that might work but if someone wants a straight blow dry don't try to talk them into keratin.

I like the ones who are nice but not too chatty. I don’t like talking to strangers much. I don’t like them asking me personal questions.

This is a great question. One thing I really don't like is a hairdresser who talks too much. I prefer to just sit there and have my hair cut. I don't mind if they talk to me, total silence can create a tense atmosphere. I understand that but keep it professional.

A few weeks ago, I went to a barber who harped on about his political views. I didn't agree with them and even if I did, it isn't the right place for it. I shan't be going back to him.

I am the same. I like when they’re quiet and just cut my hair the way I ask. Rarely I’ll get someone who strikes up a good conversation that I’m interested in participating in, but most times I just want to be quiet. One time a very attractive older woman (maybe mid to late 30s) had a good discussion with me and gave me the best neck rub at the end 😊
