Do you wear the correct size of bra for your body?

I recently discovered that I've been wearing the wrong size all along. Not that my old bras don't fit fairly well, but just to confirm I walked into a store that sells bras true to size just to try them on and turns out the bra size I recently calculated is correct. I didn't buy from the store because I found some good ones for cheaper online.

I would have never expected that it would be my right bra size until I used a very reliable online source to find out mine. I might write a MyTake to share what I learned about proper bra fitting.

Only keeping it open to guys in case there is anyone knowledgeable about bra sizing or don't mind sharing anecdotes of their partners. Others pls keep away.

There are questions here asking "What size do you think this girl's boobs are?" or "What size do you prefer?"
I used to think that C was medium, D was large-medium, and DD was huge. I'd see examples of a woman who measured 34", 24", 34" with 32C bust. I found that a woman's rib/underbust measurement is typically 3"- 4" wider than her waist. So how could she have a 32" band width? And surely her protruding breasts would add more than 3" to her rib measurement.

@SoftyAutumnal helped to clue me in. Band width is where the confusion begins. The band width is supposed to be your rib (under bust) measurement. The cup is determined by subtracting the band width from the bust measurement. If there is, say, a 6" difference she should be wearing an F cup, not a C cup with a band that is 4" too large. There are other factors to consider when choosing the right bra, but the band measurement is most important.

Very true. Most women wear MUCH bigger bands than their actual band size and that's where the problem begins. It leads to shoulder and back pain due to inadequate support. I was guilty of that too, but my cup volume was correct so it still made a huge difference compared to wearing entirely wrong sizes lol and I don't mind the bigger bands for when I gain weight or just don't want anything too tight against my ribs. But finding the right band size was such a game changer for me!

Oh and yes C=medium D=large DD=extra large is bullshit! Men always get it wrong but sadly even many women have the same misconception! Cup volume is entirely dependent on the band size and it still bothers me when I tell people my bra size and they are like "wait what that's your cup size?"

I find education on this topic fascinating from the point of view of being able to accurately describe breast size. I mean, how could Marilyn Monroe wear a 34C bra when her measurements were supposedly 35", 22", 35"?
I prefer to compare rib and bust measurements.

@LeeannaDD. Really? I read that the average difference between waist and under bust for a fit woman was 3" to 4". And I'm thinking that, if her measurements were 34", 24", 34" and her band size was 24", she would have huge knockers. But having a 24" waist and 27" or 28" rib measurement, a 34" bust would be within the medium range.

I'm interested in your thoughts.

Did you use r/abrathatfits? It is incredibly helpful. I know a girl who was given a size 36D at a regular store, but is actually a 32J. Which is insane that they can get away with recommending something so wrong

Haha you got it! Most stores just give you the largest cup size that they have and then the band size which fits the cup volume, resulting in a band size that is much larger than it should be.

Yes, and it hurts many women without them realizing it. Especially busty women, as they can even go so far as to get a reduction because of the back pain, never knowing it would go away with the properly fitted bra.

What brand did you end up with? Are you happy with it?

I got them from Playful Promises they had a huge sale and I got a really cute bra for only 10 USD, and some others that were also at very good sale prices. Not sure if their sale is still ongoing but majority of their products are already sold out lol. Not surprised as they were up to 85% off.

Let me tell you, I totally understand where you're coming from. I used to think that my bras fit just fine, but then I went to a store that specializes in proper bra fitting and I was like, "Oh snap, I've been wearing the wrong size all this time!" I was honestly a little shocked, but also relieved because I finally found a bra that fit me like a glove.

I totally agree with you about buying bras online. I've found some amazing deals on bras that are true to size and way cheaper than buying them in store. Plus, it's way more convenient to just have them delivered right to my doorstep.

Like, seriously, it's a struggle trying to find a bra that fits and doesn't cost an arm and a leg. I mean, I'm somewhat big-chested and it's seriously like trying to find a needle in a haystack when it comes to finding a cute and affordable bra. I totally get why people just end up buying the same old boring bras over and over again.

But you know what? I've actually found a few hidden gems that have worked for me. For example, I've found that Target has a great selection of bras in larger cup sizes and they're super affordable too. They're not like super fancy or anything, but they get the job done and they're way cheaper than buying bras from like Victoria's Secret or something.

I have my eyes on Natapar and Top Drawer Lingerie, but recently Playful Promises had sales up to 85% off and I got my hands on a really cute bra for only 10USD, I'm so happy about it!

Yes huge difference. Learning about measuring the first time actually was weird and hard not knowing what to really do even with clear steps🙈. didn't help that a lot of helpful sites used inch and not cm as I am and was Used to. Than changes and all. I was so greatfull finding a local shop that really helps you with it all sadly so late. But now I am wearing fitting ones.

Im aware that I’m wearing the wrong size, but I recently bought new bras and I want to use them for at least 6 more months before I go in for a proper fitting. Im a 32D currently, (regular bras) but I also wear those “t-shirt bras” from M&S and they’re a lot more comfortable.

Unfortunately even stores can give you the wrong size, they just give you what they have and usually to do that they take the biggest cup size that they have and just go up in band size until the cup size fits.

Sometimes bra fitters lie so they can sell you a size that their store caries. Thankfully someone who used to work as a bra fitter was able to figure out what size I should be.

Yeah cups aren't supposed to give support that's the band's job, the cup sizes should fit all the breast tissue in and give you the desired shaping/moulding for which you need to see the seams of the cups as they dictate the placement of breast tissue.

Yes. Too small bras can feel very restricting and suffocating and may even affect blood flow. Too big bras will not provide enough support and lead to shoulder/back pain as they have to do all the work.
