It’s not so much a criterion as a consensus. The “golden ratio” was established based on multiple studies over decades using various methodologies. Most of them boiled down to showing images of people to other people and asking them to rate their attractiveness. There was very little variance even between research teams and years. This allowed researchers to literally quantify a consensus beauty standard.
I’ve never met anyone who admits to consciously using it to judge potential mates, but i’m sure such weirdos are out there. Ell oh ell!
The golden ratio is mathematical perfection. Literally. It’s a face made from the fibonacci sequence. Now, is beauty always met by this standard? Of course not, and preferences can differ, but the golden mask can act as a general blue print of what a beautiful face should look like, and you can see for yourself that a majority of celebrities, especially ones praised for their good looks, fit into the golden mask.
The belief that the 'golden ratio' represents some kind of objective measure of beauty, is largely a myth, and the ratio itself actually doesn't occur in nature as often as many people seem to think.
As for those men in the photos, they look rather average to me.

Beauty is way to complex then just to be defined by one magazine... smh
I mean the Golden Ratio exists in more than just human bodies so it is tied, at least mathematically, to the idea of aesthetics. And speaking in general terms men who have this ratio are considered handsome.
And as I’ve been working out and slowly body recomping, the more muscle I build and fat I lose, the closer I get to the ratio. This has resulted in more compliments from both guys and women so that tells me there really is a connection between the ratio and what, at least Western Society, finds attractive.
I don't know if it is a beauty criteria or not. What I do know, however, is that in our prejudiced minds we tend to idealize the "northern-European-standard-of-beauty" (a. k. a. the white, blonde, blue eyed people) and forget that a beautiful person can be of any race, and any hair or eye colour. Chris Hemsworth, p. ex., is indeed a very handsome man, but that doesn't mean that the black guys listed are not as handsome as he is. They have just different characteristics. Also, I cannot take seriously any list about the most beautiful people "in the world" that only include English speaking individuals or listing a very high percentage of native English speakers. It's ridiculous, because it is VERY FAR from the real percentages of the world population. It should be renamed as the "most beautiful people in the english-speaking world"
