How to take off socks when visiting a friend's house?

I always wear sneakers with socks, and when I'm at home I always take my socks off. Can I take off my socks when visiting a friend's house?

You can if they are alright with it. Just ask the friend if they mind that you do that. I would make sure that your feet are clean and certainly don't put them up on anything in the house. Some people will be okay with it and others are not going to like that so it is best to just ask them before doing it. Just because you do it in your home doesn't mean that you can do it in other people's homes. Respect where you are at and the host.
