Is it rude to remove shoes in public?

I don't like wearing my shoes all day so I remove them most of the time when I'm sitting. The other day, an unknown girl told me it was weird during class in college.

Is she right? I've never been told it's rude before

Depends on the specific public place.

At the beach totally normal, would be weird if you were shoes.

In the Libary, at least make sure your feet don't stink.

At the swimming pool, same as the beach, same for the park

In a store, ... weird, but depends on the store how well its accepted.

At the city center or trainstation, gross, and for your own safety i would advise at least wear flip flops or sandals.

At a restaurant or bar/pub, also depends on the type of restaurant.

Also depends on the season, during summer less weird compared to winter. Unless temparures rise high and the asphalt burns your feet.

If you're sitting, I think it's fine. If you're walking around in public places, meaning outside, not inside buildings, it isn't necessarily rude or inappropriate but weird. Walking around in public buildings is inappropriate. I actually asked a similar question a while back. Why is it cute when girls take their shoes off when relaxing in public but gross when guys do it? Is there a difference or is it just me?

No. What’s rude in many cultures is to put on shoes inside. I even took my shoes off in prom, as it was hard for me to dance with those ruddy shoes.
