I've spent years trying to figure it out and I can't. The shit pisses me off so much. I can only do french braids because regular cornrows are too hard to get and my hands and mind literally won't let me braid that way.
When I do french braids. One braids looks fine while the other looks more like a twist and it make it even worse because it's hard to braid my hair texture in its natural state. (coily/curly).
How long did it take you to learn and when did it finally click?

Well, I'm hardly an expert, but what taught me the trick was having a job that required me to spend a good half hour every day doing nothing. Literally- I had to arrive at the school 30 minutes before it closed, and then just sit there, waiting. I couldn't use my phone- fair enough- or even read. I couldn't even take a pencil and paper and write stuff down. I was also not allowed to use the radio (fair enough, for other reasons). And I had no one to talk to. So I took to braiding and unbraiding my beard, just to pass the time.
That's probably not a viable solution for you, though.
