What do you think of the "soft girl" style?

I was looking for something else and ran across this unfamiliar term.

Soft girl is just one of several so-called “girl” types, such as egirls and VSCO girls, that spread on the social video-sharing app TikTok in the late 2010s. While egirls are known for a goth look and VSCO girls a 1990s vibe, the soft girl dons on a cuter, pinker, more sentimental aesthetic, all qualities meant to be summed up by the word soft.

"Soft girl" took off in earnest in 2019, getting its first Urban Dictionary in April that year. It became a wider topic of conversation online in November and December.

"Soft girl is a fashion style, popular among some young women on social media, based on a deliberately cutesy, feminine look. It often features pink and yellow colors, floral and heart patterns, oversized sweaters and plaid skirts, and heavy blush makeup.
But, being a soft girl isn’t just about looks. It’s also about expressing emotions, being sentimental or romantic, and embracing one’s tender, more gentle side—that is, being emotionally soft and vulnerable."

I had no idea there were all these "girl types". E-girls, VSCO, Emo, Cottagecore, Dark academia, Light academia, Normcore, Art Ho, Baddie. Jeeeez

I guess I can understand it. High school kids are motivated by peer pressure. When I was in high school there were cliques like hippies, low riders, surfers, rockers, geeks (nerds), and soshes (socialites)/cheer leaders. But the styles weren't too well defined. There wasn't that much focus on the fashion industry.

Things like disco, punk and goth came later.

With social media, photo sharing, on-line dating, makeup and fashion, I guess there was increasing focus on styles and image for girls, in particular.

A genuinely strong woman with a soft, vulnerable side that she is willing to share with you is very attractive. A woman who does not hide her femininity is very attractive.
But these women are playing into a caricature and that is fake.

The thing about "styles" to me is that they aren't genuine or individualistic, but more an imitation or a masquerade.

Hmm... it's just a "fashion statement", and not an indication of the state of mind of the world's youth, is it? Because "soft girl" style looks a lot like either "regular adolescence" or "arrested development", depending on the primary age demographic of this movement. It's not just the use of "floral wear" or "oversized sweaters and plaid skirts", though. These clothing choices seem to demonstrate a desire to appear, perhaps even act in the manner of, being childlike and naive. If this is applies predominantly to teen girls (and maybe some boys), then I guess it's fine—if not a little garish and flamboyant—but if that's your thing, more power to you.

The bigger problem is the adults who take on this style; being a teen when you are a teenager is one thing, but acting intentionally childlike and being irresponsible in your late 20s is a very different situation. This kind of style almost asks the person who revels in it to equally regress to a state of immaturity and selfishness; it's not a style of humility or discipline, it's an exhibition of ostentatiousness, a cry for validation and attention. In that sense, it fits right into our current image-obsessed, vanity-driven society.

In conclusion: thanks, I hate it.
