My mon would dress me all tomboyishly in oversized clothes. I looked like I belonged in TLC in their early days. Heck no. At 14, I started deessing myself like the other girls at school i tight uniforms, shirts and jeans. In college I got into tight mini dresses and flannel shit. After college i just settled for tees and sweats tbh

Probably from peers or influence from celebrities I liked, in my younger years.

In my early 20s, after a breakup, I decided to hit the single life with a vengeance, so I started working out routinely, and started putting a little more effort into my style. The style was pretty easy, it was all ā€œcasual college kidā€, so I got into Abercrombie & Fitch and Hollister Co. (actually worked at both for a few years…sweet employee discount😎), and again, peers just set the mold, but it was very simplistic: jeans or khaki cargo shorts, and a t-shirt or a polo shirt with a little moose or seagull insignia stitched on it. It was mostly about learning color coordination. I had my own twist, where I kind of incorporated the more hip-hop style of having an accompanying hat in a matching color to my shirt, so I’d always wear a hat, or more often, a visor. It probably sounds goofy 20 years later, but I swear I used to KILL IT with the ladies😂 I remember a girl saying I was ā€œwell put-togetherā€, stopping short of saying I had great style, maybe because it was pretty basic, lmao, but the color coordination was on point.

Then in the last ten years or so I’ve tried to start cultivating a little more grown-up of a style, and that was something I needed help on. I just consulted various online resources like websites or YouTubers, and started keying in on venturing out of the cool-but-comfortable style, and getting more into dressing up a little more. I guess that started when I was promoted to manager at a bar job, and I started wearing a shirt, tie, dress pants, and some cheap but dressy looking shoes to work, and people really responded well to it. Looking back, it was kind of rudimentary, plus I was in the worst shape of my life, so I feel like I look a little dumpy in some of the pictures, not to mention I hadn’t mastered or even considered getting the fit right. I was kind of a baggy mess, but women were still like ā€œDAAAAMMMMNNNNN!!!ā€ and my co-workers all called me either Captain Fresh or Sergeant Swag😂🤦ā€ā™‚ļø But the point is, at BARE MINIMUM, even that set me apart.

My next job was in grocery retail, and I eventually got a management position there too, so I started dressing up again, but this time with some purpose, and the help of the internet. I was making more money, and again with the help of the internet, my natural aptitude for bargain-hunting found me some great deals on foundational pieces for my wardrobe. Also, most guys AREN’T getting dressed up to that level, and most of those who do are just doing the ā€œok, I got a shirt and a tie and some loafers at JC Penney, is this good enough?ā€, they’re not really trying, or don’t know what they’re doing…. and all this means that a lot of this stuff doesn’t sell and ends up on the clearance rack, waiting for me to buy it at 50-80% off. Macy’s had great deals on sport jackets, I’d just watch the website and wait for the sales. I found ties for like five bucks in the clearance bin. The deals are everywhere, and full price is for SUCKERS, haha. In a year I built a wardrobe for maybe $1,000. I used to save the tags with the original prices and then reduced price sticker on it, and I’d total up how much everything was worth at full price vs how much I paid, and it was INSANE. So I’d put together an outfit for a day of work, and I’d calculate it in my head, and be like ā€œWOW…I paid $175 for everything I’m wearing, and it’s a $1,300 outift.ā€ Random people would compliment me in passing. People I’d have to deal with at my accounts showed me infinitely more respect. Employees are approaching me and asking if they can help me at businesses. Everywhere I’d go, they’d treat me like a big deal. If I showed up in jeans and a t-shirt to do dirty work, I can’t get the time of day. So this stuff matters.

Anyway, I still feel like I make technical fashion mistakes, or maybe I’d say I don’t do everything I could. I’m sure I’d get ripped apart by someone in the fashion industry. But I’m walking around in Manhattan maybe three days out of the year, TOPS, and maybe zero times, the rest of the time I’m around dudes in Adidas track suits and scally caps, The Irish Tuxedo, lmfao. So relative to my surroundings, I’m pretty stylish. I don’t dress up anymore other than the occasional funeral, and I’m past the frequent wedding part of my life. I’m kind of a full time jock right now, haha, plus I grew my hair long for hockey, so looking fly has somewhat fallen by the wayside. The hair looks OTHER WORLDLY flowing out of my hockey helmet…. but I look like a bag of smashed assholes the rest of the time😅 No way I can do this when I go back to work, lmfao. I still try to put myself together well, but I’m not as concerned, because the hair fucks up the whole off-ice aesthetic. I wear it up in the center of my head with a thick headband…think Pebbles Flintstone, but longer, with ringlet curls…so, yeah…oof😝

from myself! I never wanted to look like someone else, I would always try to make my own outfits of how I thought I looked nice. I would ask my mom to buy me white tights that go under dresses, and ruffle ankle socks and I would wear it with ruffled dresses, there was this blue dress in particular that I really loved and I would try to wear it on Sundays to go to church.

then before I knew those flat shoes existed I asked my mom to buy me boy shoes the dressy type, and I would wear them with dresses. when I got older I realized there's FLATS! that's what I was imagining in my head back then but I never saw anyone wear them so I opted for boy dressy shoes that you just slip on lol

I remember I asked my mom if she thought was weird for asking for boy shoes, and she said no that she just knew I had unique styles.

I always loved the way my mom dressed but I always thought I had to make my own because in my mind copying someone was stealing.

What I did realize was some of my cousins would copy me.
I started to wear these tiny little butterflies on my hair one on each side to pick up my hair from the sides.
my cousins came and we had a good time.. the next morning when I woke up and they came, they both had their hair exactly like mine with the little butterflies.. and I was like : ... so I went to fix my hair that day without the little butterflies

My brother for twins so sadly their parents would always get samey clothing and unfortunately they can't dress him up like a girl so I'm the one who's stuck dressing like a boy until it comes to school and I get to feel cute in my uniform wew spin move 😂

For me my mom too. I guess friends and peers kinda shaped a view for whats 'IN'.
My own stubborness to do exactly Not that did the rest. 😅
Jokes asside, but seeing what looks well on others, what generally fits together and then over time finding my own style what I like on myself did a lot for me.

My mum and aunt I suppose, they would buy me clothes when I was growing up and I started to like bohemian and 'rocker' styles. My mum has always dressed very bohemian herself, so I've come to appreciate this style also.

My mom bought me cute outfits like dresses when I was around 4 or 5. Today I don't wear dresses unless it's a special occasion. I like jeans and t shirts or sweatshirt and sweatpants. I also wear crop tops.

That's typically how it goes. Girls generally learn from their mothers, and boys generally learn from their father. I don't have siblings, so I only had my dad and my extended family male cousins/friends to go by.

    What's your style?

If I had to venture a guess, probably some half-blind drunk. I am the poster child for "Garanimals for Men." Thank God for my female friends who are willing to go shopping with me.
