I think, to some degree, I’m kind of a “natural” at it. Like I just sort of have an innate sense for style, at least in terms of curating looks I’ve seen on others. I was actually just at the RMV (DMV to most Americans, anyone else, the place you go to get your driver’s license, etc) today, and OH MY GOD, everyone looked heinous😱😂 I was just sitting there like “there are probably 100 people in here right now, and only FIVE OF US tried?”🤦♂️ Straight up, it was me, and like four Black dudes, holding it down on our own. Lmao, thank god those fellas had a little style, I could’ve been on my own.
Some of the women looked relatively ok, and it’s still cold, so people had jackets, I couldn’t see everyone’s full ensemble, but the men…. unbelievably poor. Relaxed fit jeans a size too big and dad sneakers as far as the eye could see, lmfao.
But like… I’m wearing sweatpants and a hoodie, and white Air Force Ones. I’m not draped in velvet over here.
https://www.youtube.com/embed/PgmiGN2mi2MBut I’m well put-together, that’s the key. Everything matches or coordinates. “You’ve got to COORRRRRRRRDINATE!”
https://www.youtube.com/embed/4Zrgc2aocnMI think I’d see the way “cool” older guys dressed when I was growing up, or even some peers as I got older, and take cues from that, plus celebrities, although they aren’t always the best guides since they can wear ridiculous shit most of us can’t pull off in everyday life.
I think I came pre-programmed with a color wheel in my head, because I’ve always been good at color coordination, without really knowing what I was doing. I could just “see” it. I think my love of sports also probably inadvertently trained me in it too, via observing team uniforms, which I can only imagined are designed by professionals, so I’d know I liked blue with either orange, white, or yellow, for example, from some franchise or another. So, when I was young and cool, it was easy to stay up with the trends. As I started getting older and out of the loop, and disdainful of the changes made by the new “it”-generation, I had to start thinking more about what I was doing. I probably watched some stuff on YouTube, I’m sure. But the overall gist of it was the idea of establishing “a wardrobe.” Being prepared for all occasions, having versatile pieces that also hopefully don’t go out of style after a couple years, and expanding my shoe collection was big too. Most guys seem to buy a pair of sneakers and wear them everyday until they wear out, and they repeat the cycle….. DON’T DO THAT, haha. It all starts with the shoes. If your shoes are fucked, your whole fit is fucked. So I probably have like 50 pairs of shoes, most of which I rarely wear, but I have them for life, because they aren’t everyday wear. I wear Air Forces or some other generic-but-classic shoe that I can easily replace.
Learning the names of fashion items, patterns, materials, etc, was also really big. It’s easier to find what you want when you know what to call it. What would’ve formerly called a “checkered” shirt is actually “Gingham.” That sorta-denim-ish material is called “Chambray.” The shoes with the little decorative holes are “brogues.” And nowadays, coming from someone who grew up just having to search stores in a shopping mall, being able to just search the internet for those things and getting a whole menu is so easy when you have the right terminology.
Oh, I did work at Hollister and Abercrombie & Fitch back in my 20s, so I had some experience dressing mannequins in outfits, etc, almost forgot about that. I already had the sensibilities I guess, but it was extra learning.
Anyway, before I make this thing 99 chapters, I’d just I have a natural aptitude (and desire to do it), that I honed via peer/elder/celebrity observation, and in later years, maybe just some Internet research, YouTube “how-to’s” that are often kind of elementary to me, but it’s just another place to get style ideas.
And my girlfriend, the past 18 years, has done well to kind of steer me in the right direction and pour some cold water on my irrational confidence where necessary😂, so I’m not out here trying to wear loud Deion Sanders suits, lmfao…
She was good for telling me honestly when I look good or bad in a color. In the past I would wear colors because I liked them; now I know to wear only certain colors, because they work for me. I’ve learned to shop and see something and say “this is AWESOME…. but it’s for somebody else.”😅😂

The ladies in my mom’s family were always super classy, so I admired that and sport a slightly “sexier” version of the classic cut dresses/skirts. I learned how to dress down from different friends whose style seemed authentically attractive, so I know how to pick out a cute-top-and-jeans sort of outfit as well.
The important thing I learned from all of them was to love the skin I’m in no matter what’s covering it… to be myself regardless of what that looks like to others.10 Replyu

After moving to CA, I would often return to their store and buy clothes, i. e. dress shirts, ties, tailor made suits etc.

I did not learn from anyone, I simply absorbed what I found to be a proper way to dress which is the classical style.
