All the time! Actually most of my clothes come from thrift shops. Like with the grey shirt in my cover pic, I got that for 100 yen (~$0.67 USD) from thrift shop. It was practically free!

Also this one: only 130 yen (~$0.87)!

    130 yen shirt!
    130 yen shirt!

Also sorry, this picture below is kind of vulgar from my 20s but I covered out the vulgar parts. I've always been very camera shy and hated when people took my picture so I used to flash people to try to discourage them from taking my picture but then my friends and everyone started to flash the camera and they took my picture anyway.

Yet my entire outfit including the peace pants on the right, my jacket, and black shirt all cost less than 1000 yen (~$6.66 USD)!

Would you ever wear second hand clothing?

I make a decent salary as a software dev but things always seemed more valuable and better to me when they were cheaper.

For example, McDonald's cheeseburger only costs 130 yen here ($0.87 USD) and that makes it so delicious. However, if it costs 500 yen ($3.33 USD), that would be disgusting with the frozen meat and fake cheese! Gross! But at 130 yen, tastes amazing!

As vulgar as it may seem your pictures in your replies are always welcome. I actually had an issue with mirrors and seeing my own reflection because I got bullied in school as a child and it cause me to develop a complex and I used self portrait photography to get over it.

It's interesting to see the different kinds of second hand items you have bought over the years. I personally don't buy second hand clothing because I make my own clothes. Thank you for sharing as always!!

I had a similar complex although not so much from bullying. It was mainly being half-white and half-Asian. In Asia my half-white looks stuck out and everyone called me "Amerikajin". Then I'd visit my mother's side of the family in the US and they're all blondes and red-heads with blue and green eyes and I'd feel so odd being half-Asian in a family full of Caucasians.

So I started to think I'm so weird-and ugly looking and started to develop a complex over it. I got over it around university when I started dating and realized at least some girls seem to be okay with my biracial looks.

Always been camera shy though. I feel like people are invading my privacy when they take my photos. I don't make a big deal over it anymore but the last one to volunteer for a photo.

Making your own clothes sounds cool! I have no idea how to do it but that I always wanted to get a shirt with one long-sleeve and one short, and a logo on the shoulder of the side with the short sleeve. I like asymmetry. If I knew how, I think I would have made wacky clothes and wore them all the time!

I actually had a similar experience to you even if it wasn't for race. When I was in the uk I was viewed as the " Italian girl" and I received smack for it. When I was in Italy I was regarded as " the English girl" and received smack for that too. So I can understand quite a bit your experience.

Making clothes isn't very difficult but it takes a lot of practice and I guess women are a bit more apt at it then men. 😄

That misfit experience can be pretty rough. I've learned to embrace and enjoy the extra attention I tend to receive. Took quite a while though!

On clothing design, I've always been a big fan of asymmetrical designs. It just seems far more visually interesting to me to break up the symmetry, like slit skirts with a slit only on one side:
Would you ever wear second hand clothing?

Or Road Warrior jacket with short sleeve on the dominant gun arm:
Would you ever wear second hand clothing?

Or the Murmillo among Roman gladiators foregoing extra arm and shoulder protection on the leading shield arm:
Would you ever wear second hand clothing?

You got to do what you got to do... I never had to yet, but if it came to that I would. For example say it's an economic depression, and I end up homeless and lose most of my possessions for whatever reason. I'm living rough and I need a clean pair of clothes to go land a job, then sure I'd hit the good will, salvation army, local charity or church to get life back on the right track.

  • Absolutely! I'm all for it, especially with today’s focus on sustainability and fashion recycling. Plus, second-hand shopping can be like a treasure hunt; you never know what unique piece you might stumble upon. It's a fun way to add some personality to your wardrobe without breaking the bank. And, on top of all that, it feels great to give clothes a second life and reduce waste. You can find some real gems out there! How about you? Do you enjoy the thrill of the hunt in second-hand stores? 😊👗

I personally don't because in the area in which I live you don't have second hand clothing shops and so I make my own clothes instead.

Yes, I have many times throughout my life. Why pay $40 for a new shirt when I can get one for $5? And when I’m done with clothing, I donate it and hope that someone else gets to enjoy wearing it.
My only exceptions to that are underwear, bras and socks. I don’t buy those second hand.

Yeah of course, a lot of stuff has only been worn once is in immaculate condition but a fraction of the original price. I do laugh when people say no but then buy it from a department store, I know people that will buy something for a party, wear it once then take it back for a refund for some reason, the store takes it back and will put it back on the rack.

I've gotten some great stuff from thrift stores over the years - a real bomber jacket, a couple of excellent sport coats and really cool, high quality, retro shirts. Stuff that was really expensive when new.

Even in high school (1969-1972) it was popular for hippies and rockers to find cool, vintage clothes at thrift shops.

    Sure, why not.

My motto is - It’s you who makes clothes wonderful, not the other way around.

Whatever you wear - wear with pride.

    That is a Fashion Statement.

I've done it a few times... Love trying different outfits and buying new clothes all the time can be expensive. If I see something second hand that looks like new then I don't mind

No, I don’t do that. The sweat and their odors are locked into the shirt no matter how much you wash it it will come out and they’ll always will be a certain smell to it and their cologne and what perfumes they wear no way I’ll do that

I do often. Right now I'm in a Jean Paul Gaultier sweater my wife found at a thrift shop down the street. Probably about $1000 new. She paid $20.

There are certain vintage pieces (clothes and bags) that you can only find if they're second hand. I would.

yes, I've bought military surplus and second hand sport coats and even a pair of shoes from ebay. The shoes retail for hundreds of dollars new, and I got them in very good condition for $100
