My nails don't grow?

It grows very little and then it literally stops growing. I want to apply nail polish but it looks bad like this. Why doesn't it grow? What can I do to make my nails grow?

I've been doing my own gel nail extensions at home because by nails just don't like to grow very long without breaking (problems with working in a kitchen). I suggest taking hair skin and nail vitamins. Also try getting manicures, or doing them yourself. Even try just putting a clear coat of polish on your nails. That always helps my natural nails grow.
