I never considered myself to be 'attractive' until I started to get 'attention' from women that I did not expect it from, especially from women that I considered to be 'above' me in physical attractiveness. That goes with women in my workplace and also out socially.

I never understood the phenomena, nor have I seen it discussed. Interesting that you pose the question, and I think it is basically true for most of us.
