He is showing you that he is comfortable around you. If you are interested in him or do feel comfortable around him, you will need to make some friendly response. Making a negative response or no response will signal him that you are not comfortable with him expressing intimacy and he will likely to back off and give you space.
High school guys don't make a lot of sense. If you like him, tell him. If you don't like him but think he might like you, ask him. There's no point playing a guessing game cause that could mean anything.
