What does it mean when your crush pats your back during a hug?

There's this guy I have a crush on but I'm not sure if he likes me as a friend or more. I talk to him once in a while at work but we haven't hung out or talked on the phone. Recently I asked for a hug and he patted me on the back during the hug. Does this mean he has no feelings for me? Or does it mean at this time we are just friends? Is there anyway we can become more than friends or should I just back off?

Nothing. It means nothing. That being said, I think you should try to hang out more with him. This way, you'll know if you really like him or just like the image you've made of him not knowing him well enough.

TL;DR: Tell him he's a cool guy and you'd like to hang out more. Maybe even mention something like "who knows, we could become best friends, or a couple?". Also, expect him to take it as a joke (the best friends or a couple part, not the hanging out part).
