Ask a girl for her number or give her mine?

i've heard good and bad things for both

asking for a girl's number can seem too forward, maybe seems like you try too hard or you're demanding.

i also heard just giving a girl your number seems too passive or disinterested in her. also girls don't want to make the first move because they expect you to so it's kind of just a dead end there.

what should I be doing then?

This is what I do and it works very well:

Get her # and name, and then call her so she has yours. Why?

1. Because that way when you call she sees your name show up rather than a random # -> so she'll actually pick up the phone.

2. You have her info and she has yours so you can both call each other as you desire

3. You can look up each others' names on facebook and learn more about each other in the meantime.

Always ask for the number. Giving her yours and telling her to call you is obnoxious and implies that you have better things to do than to exert your gentlemanly efforts on her.

(That sounds harsh, but it's exactly what a retired etiquette instructor I know told her son when he was trying to shove a bunch of business cards into his wallet for a night out with his friends "in case he met anyone.")

You should give her your number and tell her to call you or text you, whatever is more comfortable for her. If she's shy or wants you to call her, she may just text you and then you can call her when you feel the time is right.

Yeah I'm kinda in a predicament right now where I gave her mine (shes my ex) because...i simply deleted hers when I didn't want it. of course now I want her back and figured itda been too awkward to ask her for it. when I gave her mine, I said, lets talk, I owe you an apology x-xxx-xxx-xxxx. was I right to do this? assuming she's somewhat interested

Well that kinda looks like you want her to do all the work even though you're sorta trying to initiate it. Sorta like putting the ball in her court and having her figure out if she wants to pursue anything with you again. If you ask her for her number, then she'll realize you gave up and deleted hers.

i think getting her number is best because you can't be sure if she'll call you... maybe she'll get shy and think she's bothering you.

ask for hers. and it doesn't seem like your being demanding it just lets her know your interested. and don't give her yours cause that seems like a cop out and chances are she won't text you.
