Why does he avoid eye contact with me during conversation?

He avoids looking at me but has no problem making eye contact with his friend when the three of us are talking. In fact, it's like he just looks at his friend in an effort to not look at me. He isn't shy, but he also isn't particularly outgoing either - he's more of a reserved, "cool" kind of guy. He's just kinda quiet and aloof and doesn't really talk to people unless they're friends.

Before we got to know each other, he would stare at me and we would lock eyes whenever I passed him in the halls. It's odd because some days he is really nice and starts conversations with me, and other days he just avoids looking at me altogether and doesn't say anything. Is he just not interested?

sounds like a guys who doesn't know how to talk to girls. I'm sure he acts the same to other girls. He turns shy when he talks to girls.

If you say before you knew each other well he would stare at you when you walked past him. then I think he's interested.

When he has your attention he doesn't know what to do.

I wonder if when you guys are sitting quiet close to each other ( lets say opposite ), does he slyly stare at you. If so I'd say he fancys you.

If you want he to be more open round you, you should firstly understand why he's nervous and don't do what lots of girls do when they like a guy but they haven't asked the girl out yet...give up.

Joke with him, smile at him often, flirt with him. He'll soon get confident around you and look at you more in the eyes.

Honestly, I'm not good at having eye contact with most people in general. It's just something I don't notice(when it occasionally happens), until I think about it and remember)..

Guys tend to have a close-but-not-close attitude, they just tend to do this in order to keep girls wanting more. If the boy avoids eye-contact with you he might be nervous and may not want to look into your eyes if he likes you that much. Or just may not feel comfortable doing so, as it is a way of showing interest.
