How do you start a conversation over text?

like, when you first send a text, what should you say? I've heard that hey is like out dated or weird.

Say stuff your genuinely interested in. I absolutely hate it when someone texts me: "HEY! What are you doin?" and then I write out a couple paragraphs only to get a response: "Oh.. okay then!".. It's like -> Why the hell bother asking if you don't care?

The other things I would recommend avoiding, and reasons why:

- Funny statements -> You usually just make the person laugh, where they either text you "haha" or completely forget about texting you because they are laughing so hard.

- Rude statements -> "Why weren't you out with us last night?" -> We all deal with drama day to day, the last thing I want to do is explain myself while trying not to be a prick

- Stupid statements -> "Rawr" / "I have a lovely bunch of coconuts" etc.. -> What is there for me to respond to?

Simple, truthful statements, will get you a LOT farther than trying to worry about what to text. SO LONG AS you follow your own knowledge of what people DONT respond to.. If your sitting in a rut saying things that people ignore, what good is that gonna do? Basically, text your friends more often and stop taking learning lessons personally.. If someone doesn't text back just think why that might be -> Maybe they are busy during the day (work) OR maybe they didn't care for your distasteful comment OR maybe what you wrote was misconstrued because they don't know your personality.. etc and so forth.

P.s. If you are texting a girl trying to get her attracted -> Realize that girls don't go for the "boring, bland" guy.. They go for the attractive guy.. What's attractive to you will be different for me.. Though I can say I'm attracted to rebels or otherwise "fun" people.. So instead of them saying: "I miss you" these types of girls are saying: "You miss me! ;D" and I love it.. It makes me have that adrenaline rush where I don't know where we're at in the relationship.

i was having a text convo with a guy I had just met and it was going well, but then he said something I just couldn't respond to. like, the conversation really had no where else to go, so after he text me, I just didn't text back. not to be mysterious. not to send any kind of signal that I wasn't interested in him, but just because I didn't want to be obnoxious by trying to draw out the conversation longer than it could have been. as the guy, what would you have thought about this?

I would have thought that signal that you were talking about (Your disinterested / Being mysterious / etc).. And here's what kills me, is that every time that happens to me I usually make a few moves to communicate my interest (otherwise I appear annoying), but then they return by saying they found someone else.. Very disappointing, but hey it's life.

yeah I kind of figured it would come across that way. but he's from out of town so I just didn't see a point in putting myself out there. I figured if he actually meant the whole "i'd like to hang out next time I'm in town" bit, he'll contact me next time he's in town, ya know?

Just start a conversation just don't let it die I've notice that the first 5 min are good and then I'll get "oh ok" or "lol" what do you expect a girl to text back when we write a sentence or a whole paragraph I've learned that asking questions help the conversation going but ask to many and she will be annoyed find out more of each other to see what you guys have in common it will help the conversation go smothly with no one single word response.

I personally hate when a guy texts me and make me do all the talking I'll just tell them to text me when they actually want to talk and I'll say bye. It may just be me but when you send OK it's like your text back although you don't want to or you didn't even bother reading my txt

I honestly think your worries were answered by Rachiee. It's not outdated at all. Any time a guy texts me its usually what up or hey. Anything else it may get awkward. Hope I helped...well Rachiee did most of the work.lol

Lol I don't think its weird or out dated. Just say "hey what's up?" or "hey how are you?" No need to create some lavish opening line just to text someone.

Well if I want to be a bit flirty I say "Hey you ;) What have you been up to? xx" instead if the usual "hey" because it is more direct

i agree with rachiee. "hey what's up" is always a good ice breaker. no need to come up with some one of a kind one liner.. it will probably make you look a little weird anyways, way weirder then just saying "hey"
