Is it too weird to throw a random question into a semi-serious convo?

Do you think it's too weird to throw a random question like What's your favourite sport team, or Who is your favourite singer into a convo with a guy that's been mostly about serious topics? I'm trying to show a fun side to the guy I like and I feel like the topics we've been talking about haven't been that fun.

It feels a bit shallow to suddenly ask after a favorite singer when you are having a serious convo; I would consider that the opposite of fun.

However if you are having a serious conversation, you could turn that into more fun topics. For an instance: if he is talking about politics, you could ask: what would you do if you would be president for a day. It invites more fun philosophical conversations.

not to me... sometimes I end up having two or three different conversations at the same time, with the same person, lol

if the conversation is not so serious at the moment, then I don't see much of an issue with it

Its weird but mostly because its just out of nowhere. There has to be some kind of flow to a conversation or else its just like an interrogation.

If i just say something like "let me ask you a random question" does that still make it weird? Or is that more acceptable?

Thats more acceptable but you need to find a way to be subtle about it. It just depends on what he says and you can play off of what he says while asking your question.
