Do you easily recognize your fellow countrymen by appearance?

Today I got added by a person who I quite easily noticed was Georgian.

Georgian people have some kind of fire in eyes that you can’t see in anyone else, I can tell a Georgian very easily. I don’t like Georgians though, I like genetic diversity, but I do sense a Georgian.

So, when he messaged me in English, I answered him in Georgian, he got shocked that I too, was Georgian. He said he couldn’t tell because I look exotic and that it’s so special I am Georgian too.

He is an actor in Shanghai. I don’t know why all these actors seem to like me.

Regardless, I wonder how he couldn’t recognize that I was Georgian, is it that being in China for almost 5 years actually changed something in me in a way that I look exotic even to my countrymen?

I have South Korean friends (born and raised there) and friends of S. K. heritage (adopted when they were 2-8, moved to the U. S.) They look nothing alike. They agree with me that the two look different, and when the U. S.-ified ones tour the ROK they very much are discriminated against because of their "tainted" looks. Environment plays a part to be sure.

That’s really interesting. Assuming that I’ve only lived in China since I was 22. Before then I spent all my life in Georgia

I don’t know what changed in me. He didn’t think I was Asian, but he thought I was from another country. Not from Georgia, I was really surprised. I thought he’d guess my nationality just like I guessed his by looking at his eyes.

No. The U. S. is a nation of immigrants, so it's impossible to tell if someone is American by looks alone. You can only tell by their accents.

Funny! That’s how I spot all the goddamn foreigners in America. By their behavior. You know, how they fly their stupid flags from OTHER countries, and the way they dress, how they speak, and even by their smell and peculiar habits of hygiene.

I think it would be tough to figure out if someone was an American if I was in another country. Especially a European one. I think I’d need to hear an accent

In Georgia we have very strong R sound, and my English was always spoken with that strong R sound, now that I moved in China that R got totally involuntarily suppressed and I only use it when speaking Georgian.
