What does it mean if he strokes your back in a hug?

There's a guy I like. We have been intimate in the past while both in open relationships and now we are both single. I told him that I like him and that I would be interested in exploring what this is. He said he's put that sort of thing on the shelf. We have only been single for a few months. The thing is after my confession we got closer and have had hours long calls and he invites ne to hang out from time to time. So last time we hung out when we said goodbye he gave me a hug. It was a quiet close hug and he ran his hand along my lower back. We don't usually hug when alone. We hug in group settings when everyone else hugs. But this time we were alone and then he ran his hand along my back while hugging me. After the hug he also complimented me on my newly dyed hair saying it suited me. We had already hung out for a few hours at this point. Am I delusional? Is he just being friendly?
