If a guy teases you does he like you?

I’ve known this guy (let’s call him Sam) for around 3 years now, and we have been pretty good friends. We dont really agree on much, but there is always some type of ‘tension’ between us. At times when I am around Sam, he seems to always say something like “You look good”, or “You are cute” when I say that something is cute. In the past, Sam has made fun of me a lot, and till date, he does which usually involves taking my phone and making me steal it back, or calling me a nickname which he doesn’t tell me the meaning of.

Recently, Sam’s best friend told me that Sam told him about a girl. The best friend, knowing I’m quite good friends with Sam, ended up asking me whether I knew about this girl. I said that he didn’t tell me. Then, Sam’s best friend asked me if in the past I have dated “weird guys” like Sam, to which I answered no but wondered why he asked me. Sam’s best friend also made a mention that, “You know what they say, enemies turn into lovers”, which confused me further, making me think that he may know something that I dont.

However, it is quite normal for Sam to behave in a flirty way, because he has previously mentioned that he wants to be in a relationship. The above examples, along with me catching him looking at me sometimes, and him nudging me or trying to be around me at times, has left me unsure of what his intentions are. Sam used to call me quite often late at night to check in, but no longer as he was told by someone he knows that he needs to keep distance from girls. At the same time, he can also be closed off and unfriendly towards me at times, as he is a moody guy.

So then, is this behaviour indicating anything?
