Thier around when you really need them, apologize/feel bad if they hurt you, they get protective/warn you of a potentially dangerous situation, look after you when your sick, make an effort to make you feel good, ask if your OK when your down, pay attention to your words and emotions.

If he actually cares about you he'll be involved in your life outside of school. I'm guessing you're in high school, if your'e in sports or a performing art, he'll support you by being there. He'll meet your parents, that DEFINITELY shows he cares.
