How to approach girls in college?

Long story short, I'm an average looking 18 year old college student, and I've been single my whole life. With my class schedule, and most other people I assume, I don't see the same girls very often. That makes it really difficult to form any sort of friendship. I don't have the confidence or looks to just go up to girls I don't know. The only way I would be able to do that is if I was sure she was attracted to me. So my question(s) is what are the "signals" that I should look for? How could I tell if a girl is into me if I'm in class with them? And how should I approach them?

Hey man, I'm going to just throw my opinion in and you can take whatever you want from it. I'm a sophomore in college right now. I had a lackluster year socially last year, but I've learned a lot and life is pretty good now. I think the question of "how to approach/attract girls" is pretty irrelevant in a practical sense. The only thing that you really need to learn how to do is learn how to love life and have a blast without needing anyone else's approval. If you're at a party, girls are a lot more likely to want to talk to you if you're having fun, and have unbreakable confidence in everything you do. Just ease up. Life is SO much bigger than you. Just relax and have fun. No one is there for the sole purpose of judging you, so you don't owe anyone anything. Just make a lot of friends, do as many extracurricular activities as you can, and live it up! You're the only one who can choose whether to hold yourself back or not.

P.S. Don't try to meet girls in class! Be interesting, and if it's meant to be, they'll pursue you.

It's easiest when you wait for inevitable group work. The only talking I've really done with any females in my classes (except for one, where two girls talked to me religiously) was during group work. I find randomly thinking of things to say pretty awkward unless you're thrown at each other and forced.

Ask them what the homework is! Say you forgot to write it down or you don't have your book yet so can you copy the pages out of hers at the library! On your way there, ask if she minds getting a coffee with you first, yaknow? You want it to flow.

As for signals, if they tease you about the little stuff, or they look at you a lot, or ask you instead of the girl they're sitting next to, about what the teacher just said, if they need to copy some notes, offer! Just the little things you do can spark something.

Just start off by saying hi or smiling when you make eye contact so you get familiar with them. Hopefully then you'll be able to have a few convos and exchange numbers

Talking about classes, professors, and majors doesn't work in the slightest. Girls don't want boring topics and small talk. They want hot, engaging, interesting, and confidant guys who bring up appropriate emotionally charged or humorous conversations

otherwise just go compliment them, get to know them and ask for their number if you guys click

Just picture whatever girl you are wanting to approach taking a massive dump. That will knock her off the pedestal and you'll be less nervous.
