Are sexual jokes a type of flirting?

Debate with friends today, some say yes and some say no/depends on the overall situation.

Does it matter if the people involved are gay/lesbian and straight (ie one is gay/lesbian and the other is straight) vs if everyone has the same sexual orientation?

How can you tell if the person telling the joke is trying to flirt (if the joke is a type of flirting)?

In this situation the person telling the joke was a female, who is a lesbian, who told it to someone who she only recently knows who is also female.

It really depends on the person/situation. Most times though I would say that it's not really flirting. Personally those types of jokes are too forward if I'm trying to flirt with someone so I just stay away from them. And I don't think it really matters for peoples orientation, everyone makes them.

As for telling if they are flirting that's a tough one. It really depends on what is happening. If you just slipped up on some words and gave them a perfect chance for a joke then I wouldn't think much of it but if its more of a "lets go back to my place" sort of joke then flirting would be a good guess.

I think they are.. I would never make a sexual joke to casual friends , but I might if I was trying to flirt with them.

To me yes and no I do like somewhat romantic sexual jokes now that I'm 31 too and it depends how it said or who it's about but I would say there's a way to tell sexual jokes about being an evil creep and not being like a predator there's a way that is very sweet and romantic.

Like jokes " I love hearing a man scream or moan". Or "such sweetness is tempting".

Seems harmless and isn't something that sounds like someone trying to be a predator or evil creep or anything but... just a beauty that is sex and romance.

depends on how sexual and if your the point of visual contact in telling them, tell him the one about the magic vibrator, If he says I have not herd that one, say no I'm sure my batteries have run out, don't be scared to get dirty verbally, just not slutty

Yepp, they are testing the waters. If you don't think that the sexual jokes they are telling are disgusting then they know they can open up the flood gates a little bit more. They can then turn the conversation away from sexual jokes to sex talk in general which then could lead to sex.

I think they are in a way. I would never tell a sexual joke to someone who I was just casual friends with, who was female.

If the jokes all the sudden turn into sexual innuendos then most likely it was flirting.
