Senior girl liking a sophomore boy?

I am a senior. I recently met this boy at my church who is a sophomore at my school and he seemed very nice. We go to the same school and I've always thought he was cute. I think he's 16 so he's on the older side (I'm not even 18 yet), he acts mature, and is taller than me so seems older, and I think he could be a nice friend or something more hopefully and I want to continue to talk to him. What should I do? He told me about this tv show at a church event so would it be weird if I message him and say something funny like thanks a lot im now addicted to the show (which i am!) and ask him how far along in the season he is or something? I live in the a super small town in the south so its hard to handle since the community is small but he seems like a nice kid and we smiled at each other today in school. I appreciate any advice thanks so much!!

thanks everyone!! Do you think i should try talking to him in person first or just give it a few days and see if i run into him again?

one more question: do you think it would be weird to have a friend who knows him casually mention us going to prom together as friends? maybe it would be a fun way to get to know each other!!
