Peanut Butter and Jelly Sandwich... which is on top?

A Peanut Butter and Jelly Sandwich (PBJ) is a very easy sandwich to make and eat. You spread Peanut Butter on one slice of bread and Jelly (flavor of your choice) on the other slice, then put one on top of the other.

The big question, though, is which one goes on top and which on the bottom?

I hold mine with the jam on top and I also agree with the OP's opinion on the matter. All things being equal, I also feel the taste is a little more balanced with a first hit of peanut butter from the bottom and not jam first. The sweetness of the jam can overpower your tastebuds before the flavour of the peanut butter hits and can mess up the flavour profile. Whereas when the peanut butter hits first, the sugar and flavour of the jam comes through and compliments it better in my opinion.

I know this must seem utterly insane or like being a neurotic stickler to some people, but it does make a difference. lol Don't believe me though? Try this little life hack the next time you eat crackers (especially if it's topped with something - anything)...

For salted crackers, they usually have one side that is salted and one side that is not. I see so many people just put their topping of choice on the salted side and just eat it like that without ever giving it any thought. Next time, put your toppings on the unsalted side so that when you put it in your mouth, the salted side hits your tongue first. Believe it or not, that initial hit of salt amplifies the flavour of the cracker, as well as the topping that's on it. When it gets eaten with the unsalted down against your tongue, it's less flavourful. The salt is there for a reason. It's not just to make the cracker taste better. It's also there to make whatever you put on it taste better too, and it actually tastes better with that initial hit of salt. 😉 Same amount of salt, just more flavour.

Don't just take my word for it though. Eat a few crackers with the unsalted side down, then follow it up with a few with the salted side down. You're welcome. lol

Lets say you make it breadpeanut butter jelly bread. You put it together and the peanut butter is on the top piece of bread and jelly on the bottom piece of bread. If you flip it over is the jelly now on the top piece of bread and peanut butter is on the bottom piece of bread or is the sandwich upside-down? Technically the bread is the top and bottom.

Jelly: Jelly is made with strained fruit juice. There are no pieces of fruit in jelly.

Jam: Jam is made with mashed fruit.

Preserves: Preserves have whole fruit or large pieces of fruit. Some fruits such as blackberries or raspberries will not stay whole during the processing so there may not be much difference between raspberry jam and raspberry preserve.

Fruit spreads (only fruit): These are 100% fruit with no sugar added. If needed, a sweet fruit juice such as white grape juice or apple juice may be added. Because of the sugar in the fruit we cannot call these products sugarless. These spreads offer the most amount of pure fruit flavor.

Butters: Butters are made from pureed fruit. They are not as sweet as preserves, jams, or jellies but offer a full fruit flavor. Butters are cooked for over 6 hours , at a low temperature, allowing the product to thicken. Butters tend to be dark because of the exposure to air during the cooking. These are also available with no sugar added.

Jelly on top, always. Whenever I put the jelly on the bottom, then after sitting in my lunchbox for a few hours, it inevitably soaks through the bread. And that's gross.

Also, like you said, peanut butter (or sun butter usually, since I work with kids), sticks to the roof of my mouth. And that's unpleasant.

Plus, if I put the jelly on the bottom, the flavor of it hits my tongue first and can be very overpowering. Because it spreads out faster than the peanut butter does. But if I put the peanut butter on the bottom, the jelly gets there too because of how easily it smushes, but it doesn't overpower the other flavors.

Doesn't matter to me, cause I can flip it over anyways... but often I only make using one slice of wheat bread, so then I fold it over.

When I eat a sandwich I rather it is not sweet. I have no issues with jelly and I sometimes snack on peanut butter and crackers. To give an idea of just how sweet a PBJ sandwich can be think about this. Someone that is a diabetic OR a pre-diabetic can go from a blood sugar of 150 to almost 400 by eating one of these. If you do eat them at least try to use sugar-free jelly.

Jelly is always on top. I apply everything to the bottom slice though. The top slice of bread is only needed for packaging (if eaten later).
