There was a time when I was living off of plasma donations. If you've never given plasma, it's a lot like giving blood, only it takes much longer, because they take the blood, siphon out the plasma, then give you the rest back. Because it takes so much longer, they compensate you for your time (since they're not allowed to compensate you for the plasma, as that'd be trafficking in body parts). And boy HOWDY, is it different in attitude. When you're giving blood, you're a hero; when you're giving plasma, you're livestock. Sometimes they'd screw it up, and you'd wind up with a massive bruise covering the inside of your elbow, and while they'd be deeply apologetic if you were giving whole blood, the plasma donor gets an "oh, well". Anyone who thinks that American society is truly classless should spend a few months doing both; you'll see a difference REAL quick.

Needless to say, getting by on scavenged dandelions gives you perspective VERY fast. You start thinking that stupid European weed they call "grass" should be illegal, and the idea of throwing food away quickly becomes intolerable.

I lucked out and got a job- but it was a job in foodservice. The amount I saw thrown away was heartbreaking. Officially, we weren't allowed to take tips, but I took every penny I was offered- and promptly donated it to the local food depository.
