+1 yForgive me for showing my former Chicagoan nature here, but: it depends on the pizza. Something with a spicier sauce and a richer, fluffier but not sweeter crust, like a Jet's, calls for something that contrasts pleasantly, like pineapple. Putting pineapple on a Lou Malnati's pizza, on the other hand... well, I'm open-minded enough to say that burning at the stake is excessive, but I think some kind of mandatory pizza-toppings pairing class is reasonable. Lou's calls for sausage and- well, no; I'd actually argue that sausage should be the default for their pizza.
Now, a Home Run Inn, you don't WANT to contrast with, because that cheese and sauce pairing is apart enough that favoring one side or the other is just going to throw the whole balance off. Pepperoni is too acidic, Italian sausage too spicy, peppers and onions too different in texture- you want something that compliments either both sides or the contrast inherent in the pizza itself. There aren't a lot of common toppings that do that; I don't know why they even SELL it with the usual four. It might be good with mushrooms; I don't know- I don't eat mushrooms, as I find them disgusting (though if you enjoy them, that's cool- you can have mine). HRI calls for supplementary spices, rather than traditional toppings, at least to my mind (although the right kind of barbecue-sauced chicken could work...). I've always wondered what their version of deep dish would be like, but for some reason, despite being a Chicago pizzeria, they adhere to the "Waah, we can't eat six pounds of cheese in one sitting!" mindset that the rest of the world holds to.
If you take a Giordano's- damn, this is making me homesick. Okay, I can admit I grew up spoiled for good pizza, but it's something Florida does not take at ALL seriously. Not enough Italians, maybe.
Anyway, it's all about finding the right flavor combinations- hitting the right patterns to make your taste buds get up and dance.

I'm fine with just pepperoni, but I'll take Meat Lover's, green peppers, or mushrooms, too. And yes, I'm fine with pineapple on pizza, but I wouldn't ever pay for it myself; I'd take it if it was Free Pizza Day and that was all that was left or something.

+1 yI can tell you what kind of pizza I like, then you'll understand toppings a bit better. Cheese pizza: Regular cheese & tomato sauce. Extra cheese & cheese garlic sauce.
Veggie pizza: Pretty much anything on it except the olives.
Chicken pizza: Chicken & veggie, chicken taco, and BBQ chicken with pineapple. Always extra chicken on any of them.

Hmm.
Depends on my mood.
Sometimes just pepperoni hits the spot.
Pepperoni and sausage
Sometimes a supreme.
Or a chicken and spinach.
So many ways to go.
Why limit yourself
