There isn't! Really! :) Not trying to be snarky, but it really depends on what the other ingredients are or what total umami profile.
My favorite? Cheddar; unless it is a mushroom burger in which case it's Swiss cheese.
If I have to have cheese on a burger then a good strong sharp Cheddar melted on the grill plate and flipped so its slightly crunchy on both sides.
A definite No-No is 'American' cheese or the 'cheese' slices, both are reminiscent of plastic!!

I think all of the above work very good for burgers. Usually on ours it's the American cheese. But we put shredded parmesan on chicken & kale burgers. I like white cheese on my turkey burgers, but it can be the American cheese too.
None of the above, on my burger I like them shitty little plastic cheese slices.
They do me on my burger they also taste pretty ok so them.

I haven't been a fan of American cheese since I was a kid, until I started making smash burgers and so called Oklahoma onion burgers a few years ago. There is no substitute for American cheese on either of those.
It honestly depends on what type of burger it is and the ingredients inside. Mostly I use swiss or cheddar. :)

Now thats a tough one since it very much depends on the other toppings. For just a burger American cheese. But I do love me a good mushroom Swiss burger. A spicy patty with some pepper jack is pretty good to.
