Goodness, yes- several, actually. There are over ten thousand cultivars of apple commercially produced in the US alone (and that's just the commercial ones!), so I can't say I've tried them all (growing apples isn't like flowers- if you plant snapdragon seeds, you'll grow snapdragons; you won't inexplicably get daffodils), but I've had quite a few, and noticed some interesting patterns.
If you ask people on the street what their favorite apple is, the most common answer you'll get is a confused blink and an "Um... red?". Putting those folks aside (I guess they're just not into apples), Honeycrisps are hugely popular (as they were engineered to be), but expensive (as they're grown in limited quantities to control the price), but Galas and Fujis are very popular, too.
I'm a Braeburn man myself, but one can't appreciate a Braeburn without giving due respect to the Granny Smith, which is a sadly disregarded apple in modern times- I've been asking people about their favorite apples for over a decade, and never ONCE have I heard "Granny Smith" as a reply.
I've never actually tried baking with apples, so I can't comment on that, but I've used pretty much every variety I've ever tasted in some form of salad or other. In that case, it depends on what you're pairing it with- Braeburns don't work so well with, say, radishes; gluconisates and tartness don't blend well, like Lik-M-aid and root beer. Find a good sweet apple, though, and you have a GREAT pairing- Ambrosia's the best I've found so far, but Fujis are good, too, and I'm convinced there's a way to make them work with Sweetangos, but I haven't been able to find it yet. If you're pairing with a blander vegetable (or even one with a different strong flavor, like carrots or beets), you'd need something different; a Rome or a McIntosh, perhaps.
My favorite apples for fresh eating are Honeycrisp & Granny Smith, for cooking or baking or making cider I tend to use Cortland or Nothern Spy.
We always go apple picking in the fall! 🍎🍏
My favorite to eat are honeycrisp or pink ladies.
When baking apple pie, I use granny Smith or Cortlands - these types don't turn to mush.
I also use honeycrisps in some salads.
If just baking apples - I try and get a variety.
That looks so good! Does the Granny Smith apples make it more sour or how does that effect it?
Not all apples are made to withstand the heat of baking. The tart apples are the sturdiest and won't turn to mush.
For pies, the sturdiness of tart aples are ideal BUT you do have to add a lot of sugar to compensate.
So then no, it doesn't effect the taste. If you're able to use a combination of semi sweet and tart, that would reduce the sugar needed. 🙂
Oooo! Cool! Haha! That’s epic!
Liam would like to know why you blocked him? Did he do something wrong?
My favorite apples are Golden Delicious apples. Any other apple I eat is red colored.
I also love apples with caramel or peanut butter. Especially caramel apples with the nuts on them in the fall season.
Haha! I do love apples with both caramel and penut butter but I do not at all enjoy the candied apples in the fall. I mean maybe I could get in to them as an adult but I had a few as a teenager and it just was an awkward situation. Maybe I didn’t get the process right.
I've never had the apples with the chocolate on them before, just the classic nutty caramel apples. But apple dumplings are good to try if you don't like those. They sell lots of foods at the festival in the fall where I live. Apple dumplings, caramel apples, berry shortcake, apple chicken wings, chicken dinners, and fresh root beer are some of my favorites. My sister loves the fresh root beer and buffalo jerky (not spicy, made from real buffalo meat).
Oh my gosh that does sound delicious!! All of it! Haha! I went to the fair this last fall for the first time in probably twenty years. The amount of food was unholy. Haha! I had fried Oreos… that will become a staple for me…
