Do you eat Cornish pasties with ketchup?

Have you ever had a Cornish pastie?

I was pretty young when I first had one. My family used to get them on occasion from a place that was a few miles from our home. They gave packets of ketchup with them. And it's the only way I have eaten them ever since.

Now I live near a town that had lots of Cornish miners during the Gold Rush, and there are several pastie shops. I love pasties but only if they are drenched in ketchup.

What's weird is, I only like ketchup on certain things. I mean, some people put it on virtually everything.

Anyway, if you eat pasties, what do you like to put on them?

It's true. It's just wrong to put ketchup on many things, especially ethnic foods.

I guess the Cornish miners who came to California got introduced to ketchup here in America. I'm sure they didn't take condiments down into the mines. But packets of ketchup are now included when you buy pasties. That was true when we used to get them in So Cal when I was a kid and it's true where I live now in the Gold Country.

After all, pasties are basically meat and potatoes. No sauce or gravy, and not a whole lot of flavor. LOL

ahhh, so a meat pie or a hot pocket? i don't eat them. but a chicken pot pie i do. i'd never put ketchup on a pot pie unless it was a beef pot pie.

I'd just use instant gravy at home.

I read that they have been a tradition for hundreds of years. Wives made them for their husbands to take down into the mines.

One article I read basically described them as a pastry filled with leftovers. It also said it was what the miners would take with them for nutrition.

I have a friend from Brazil and she makes empanadas, which appear similar.

Yes. Empanadas are the same idea. Different seasoning and slightly different crust.
