What is a good wine you would recommend me to gift an old coworker?

My old co-worker invited me for dinner and said it's on her. However, I intend to return the favour by giving her a good bottle of wine and black liquorice. (she LOVES black liquorice)

Which wine should I get? I'm not looking into something extremely expensive but I still want a decent bottle.

I used to drink a lot of wines, but have not kept up with them and can't recommend anything. But I do know that wine is a very personal choice and involves LOTS and LOTS of trial and error. I also know that the palate changes depending on a lot of things. A wine that you love one day might taste mediocre another day.

The reason wine snobs use so many weird words to describe wines is because it gives a very rough idea to someone else what the wine tastes like. But there is no possible way to know if someone will like a wine without trying it.

If you buy wine for someone else, it's really a random pick. I would listen for hints from the person you are buying for. Listen for very basic things that are easy to remember, such as red vs white, or sweet vs dry, or maybe even a specific variety. Also ask friends who know the person.

After that, just go to a wine store, tell them what you know about the person, and let the person at the store pick something for you. It will end up being a largely random pick no matter what. Most people will like a variety of wines, with very few (if any) that they really dislike. So just take a shot and you should be OK. It might not be the person's favorite, but I'm sure they will enjoy it.

And don't forget, they all have alcohol. Anyone who says that alcohol doesn't have anything to do with it is lying. The trial and error of trying wines is half the fun. And they all give you a bit of a buzz, maybe more than a bit. After the second glass, they will all taste better.

I tell people that you cannot go wrong with a Cabernet from Napa Valley or for Sonoma for that matter.
