Find out what your friend or the family likes from asking them or looking at their bar. Might be safer to give red or white wine according to what's being served. Or a dessert wine like port or a good sauterne, or champagne.
Find out what they like and give accordingly.
I have to laugh at all the answers. I guess I'm not as fancy as all of the rest of you. I'd prolly bring 'em a 12 pack of Pabst and then drink half of it. 🤣
Yes, wine not spirits. Around here, a lot of hostesses prefer white wine to red wine... or bubbly champagne-style wine is always a winner. Lots of people do not drink spirits and if they do then taste is pretty personal.
I would stay away from hard liquor. Buy a good bottle of wine, if it has to be alcohol.
When choosing a hostess gift, a high-quality wine or sparkling wine is often appreciated. It's versatile and generally enjoyed by most people. For those with a taste for spirits, a premium bottle of whiskey or gin could work well, especially if you know the host's preferences. One time in Italy, I gifted a nice bottle of Prosecco, which was a hit during a festive dinner. Whatever you choose, a thoughtful presentation can make it even more special. Cheers! 🍷

Never done this because I am not of age yet. I can say that when my parents threw parties, many would bring wine.
Wine. Bottle of red and a bottle of white. Can't go wrong. Much safer than spirits unless you know someone is a Whisky or Gin fan.
Unless you know a particular brand of spirits that the host/hostess really enjoys I would just go with a quality red wine myself.
Depends on how well you know them. Like if you know them well then you know what they drink.
A really good bottle of Gewurztraminer wine. Goes with everything. If you have never had it, you don't know.
Wine if you don't know them, preferred spirit if you do
Grey Goose vodka.
Hmmm... horribly overpriced stuff, even in France. If you want to impress someone for a lot less money and seem like you know something about wine, give them a bottle of Crémant. It's as good as Champagne, made the same way, only it comes from a different region so you're not paying for the "name" of Champagne. It's also less than half the price of Grey Goose.
@loveslongnails I don't like wine or champagne, either. I can't drink cheap vodka.
Well your guests might not know that? Besides, there are plenty of other good vodka's that don't cost nearly what Grey Goose costs, in my opinion. But if I knew in advance that you liked it, and were hosted an event, I'd bring you that.
