Maybe I'm wrong, but I have the idea what you call "wet cake" would here be called "pudding". When I was young it was the custom to prepare pudding with old bread, water, spices, sugar, and sometimes roseins. The result is indeed a moist delicious kind of cake.
We call it either a snack cake or coffee cake in my part of the Midwest US, but as you describe it, I think the concept is the same: something quick and easy, usually with minimal ingredients. I don't know if feeding men so they could get back to work quickly was ever a consideration. I make it gluten free (yea i know) and it's delicious. To make sure it's extra moist! 4-5 minutes less in the oven than the original recipe's cook/bake time and take it out and rest/sit for 10 minutes. It would be even more delicious
