I think situation dictates the more successful way. If the situation is controlled a diagonal cut can be performed. However this does not share the top crust with the intended target of the share. A straight vertical cuts shares all. It you are out on a picnic and don't have a knife, make a line of smush down the middle and tear down the smush line. It works pretty good.

Cut the peanut butter and jelly in half right down the middle. The peanut butter always goes first then the jelly. You don’t wanna get everything full of jelly then start dipping into the peanut butter making it sloppy.
