Which way do you cut your sandwich?

One of the trials and tribulations in life is buying a sandwich. I DON'T WANT MY SANDWICH CUT. Simply because the fillings fall out more easily if the sandwich is cut. Instead I want the sandwich to be firmly squished together.

But at sandwich bars, even though you ask for it not to be cut and even though as they reach for the knife I repeat don't cut it, it is so ingrained that half the time they can't stop themselves.

I really intensely dislike the fillings falling out onto my desk. If it has to be cut then the classic diagonal cut is worse because the sandwich is weak at the points. But again sandwich bar girls often just can't stop themselves.

This question is in fact so important multiple scientific experiments have been done to confirm the optimal method: Diagonally.

The reason? The tasty part of a sandwich is the filling. Cutting it diagonally guarantees more filling in most bites. And therefore a better average taste.

As a very serious topic I suggest people try both ways and examine the difference in experience. Diagonally is superior.

I cut my sandwiches to resemble the one on the left side of this image.

I know when I cut it this way, it subconsciously shows me I have “more sandwich”; it’s easier to hold, and easier (for me) to consume.

The right hand side, shows me categorically just how “small” my sandwich is (square shapes tend to do that best), so I don’t favor that way of cutting it.

It may be different for everyone. Maybe they like the symmetry. Maybe they feel they do have more since there would then be 2 pieces instead of 1. 🤷‍♀️

Diagonally. The hypotenuse gives you the best presentation of meat (or other sandwich filler) and an easier-to-bite surface area for those of us who can't unhinge our jaws horizontally like the freaking Predator.

I cut from the top to the bottom. Cutting from the bottom to the top is just too hard. You have to toss it into the air and slash at it—and most of it lands in your face.

I use home baked bread, and it's often not symmetrical enough for that kind of cutting. Plus, the way I stack my sandwiches, it's often better not to cut them at all. LOL
