Scotch. How can anyone stand that stuff?

I rarely drink alcohol, but I've tried scotch, and it's absolutely  foul . One of the worst things I've ever tried.

It is an acquired taste but many of the best things are like that. I don't like anything but single malt scotch, neat, and absolutely no mixer. Since you sound fairly new to the world of spirits one unasked for suggestion. I've seen people order things like Hennesy and Cole or Remy and seven-up. Please don't ever make that mistake. If you want to drink something sweet order a brandy and coke. They will give you what bartenders call "speed rail" liquor, People who order high priced spirits like good cognac- that's what Remy and Hennesey are is cognac and Cognac is one of three types of Grench spirits that are gov't controlled in that grapes used, aging process etc. is strictly controlled. These apply to Cognac, Armagnac and Calvados. The letters you often see following the brand name eg. "VS or VSOP stand for Very Special and Very Special Old Pale/ Because these only use the best ingredients and the lengthiest aging processes they are expensive and have a certain cachet to them. If you ever order them they should only be drunk straight absolutely no mixer and not even ice. If you want something with juice or soda, don't bother with any of the French brandies ( all Cognac, Armagnac ) are brandies as brandy is simply the term for a distillate made from grape Marc. Anyway, if you are drinking mixed drinks don't bother with the more expensive ones. Cognac, Louis XIII sells for roughly $400 a bottle and the bottle itself is baccarat crystal. A snifter of that will cost you around $100 a pop and are always served in snifters so you can gently warm the spirit by the way you hold it which allows it to open up and makes it even better. If someone ever offers to heat the snifter for you walk away, s/he hasn;t a clue. Anyway a brandy and coke will cost you ( SF, CA price) $4.75. A Hennessey, Remy or Martel cordon Bleu and coke will cost about $15 and you won't be able to taste the difference because the mixer overwhelms the flavor. So, by doing so you pretty much peg yourself as a rube in the eyes of a bartender and bartenders can be a special ally in the various social world taking place in front of him or her. Just thought I'd share a piece of unrequested wisdom.

I think it's for manly man hard core boozers.

I don't like whiskey flavors.
I also hate vodka.
I do like rum, gin and tequila but almost always have them in cocktails.
I like brandy.
I like good quality red wine best of all.

To put whisky in perspective
The welsh export £23 million worth
The Irish export about £730 milion
But Scotland exports a whopping £5.6 Billion worth.

That's a lot of people who like whisky and Asian countries are the biggest consumers. It's a sobering thought to think the British economy is dependent on Asian alcoholics

I had the same experience at a party, where I was invited to try some expensive Scotch. It was a double assault on my tongue and my nose. Absolutely vile experience, never again.

It is SOUR not foul. We don't drink it for taste but for the buzz!

In james bond book a guy orderd wiskey in bubbly water to dilute it. But it is not like cola for the sweet taste of it.

Also the "pros" do the "knock it " called "chug" quickly splashing it on the back of the palate! Not for tongue.

Like many things, it's an acquired taste. It's not drunk as much as sipped. I enjoy a good Scotch it poured over a large ice cube, after the ice melts a bit. It has gotten rather expensive over the past ten years or so, so instead I drink American Rye.

As a scotch drinker I'll try not to take offense. It's not everyone who can appreciate it, that's true. Personally I find coffee revolting. Each to their own taste.

I prefer Gin these days , but I drank Whiskey for years.. There is a Thai one I will drink Samg Song its a rum , but Gin is my preference.

I don't drink booze so, I have no idea how anybody drinks any of it!! Schnapps is the only booze I've tried that actually tastes good.
