Good question. Of any intoxicant available alcohol is the most pernicious. I'm talking about beyond moderate drinking. The reason people like it is due to a brief period where a drink or two seems to relax, overcome inhibitions etc. People who try to maintain the brief euphoria find out that it cannot be maintained.
I know that alcohol can affect women's health faster & in smaller quantities in men. What upsets me the most about it is when a lover requires alcohol before they think about sex. I've dated more than one woman who has been sexually forward when inebriated yet frigid when sober. That's the point when it really becomes a problem. When you need something you've lost control over it and it essentially controls you. Southern European countries seem to have a healthy way of approaching it. Wine with meals can improve the taste of both food and wine. There are also some premium whiskeys that are worth tasting but not to get loaded on. I worked some time at a rehab as a counselor and witnessed the effects. Alcohol is the only drug that can be fatal ( it's close cousin, benzodiazpines can also be fatal). Withdrawing from opioids can make you feel like you want to de but alcohol can actually kill you in withdrawal. The spirits lobby spends a lot of $ and fought hard to ensure alcohol was nit classed as a drug ( which is why you hear the phrase drugs & alcohol). I think the worst thing about it is the impact it can have on people who get killed by DUI drivers, families who suffer because of violence. I can almost always tell when a person was raised in a house with alcohol issues.

Everything depends on what kind of alcohol, because quality beer, wine, Whisky, kryshova rakja, Cognac, Calva, etc. do have an excellent taste, depending on once's own taste of course.

Worth mentioning is the historical truth about beer and wine. During centuries clean drinking water was not easy to find, and many diseases resulted from drinking contaminated water. Keep in mind all the terrible epidemics having ravaged so many parts of the world. Odds for people drinking beer or wine were much higher to survive, because drinks containing alcohol may be considered disinfected water, sure with an extra element of fun if not ingested in to big quantities ;0)

In most Western countries drinking alcohol is not necessary anymore to be kept safe from diseases, but believe me, the taste is not bad, at least if you choose well.

Well that could be true. But what they don't realize. It's not there mind that becomes addicted. It's there body. There mind might be saying I want to stop friend. But its there body that say no

It's a social norm, so folks partake. It's not meant to be consumed by the liter (or as I say, "to the death") obviously, though some folks do drink that way. (Not all of them taste bad. Some are sweet and some are very bitter.)
