Why do I feel like school cafeteria food was either absolutely terrible… or randomly kind of yummy one day?
There was always that one item everyone actually looked forward to (in elementary school).

Breakfast pizza, eggs, some weird cheese which definitely doesn't belong on pizza, and everyone lined up for it.
I just saw it as some idiot finding random cheese, dough, cracking eggs on it and going "tee hee heee!!! I made breakfast pizza!" No, you broke eggs on a square sheet of dough and threw a foreign cheese on it and didn't even bother to melt it, either🙄😂
I was scolded as weird for being the guy who just took the frozen burgers instead. The only food I ate in the cafeteria that I ever ate twice, voluntarily were the pink lady apples.
Overall, the canned mackerel in olive oil i had last night was healthier, easier to stomach and more flavorful than anything I ever had in school besides the apples.
If and when I have kids, making them lunch definitely seems like the right way to go. A good 1/5 times, the burgers weren't cooked hardly at all.
It's a miracle nobody died of food borne illnesses in that school, considering 3,300 kids went to my high school and almost all ate cafeteria food every day...
I actually took a bag lunch every day. I never ate the cafeteria food. However, I always found cafeteria food to be pretty good. In college we had fried chicken, steak and port chops on a regular basis and if you did not like what was on the menu you could aways get a hamburger. In the Air Force the food was good too. I can remember the fried rabbit. It tasted like chicken but you just knew you were not eating chicken'
I was just in the hospital last month and I had one meal there and it was roast turkey. It was quite good.
@7Phoenix7 Yes, I had a hip replacement a month ago. It was rough for a while but I am doing better. I put the walker away and I hardly use the cane. I started PT last week.
I am looking forward to the summer.
Thank. You. This is the MyTake of my first hip replacement almost 5 years ago.
Hip Hip Hooray! ↗
So both hips replaced? I think hubby has a buddy had both replaced as well and is back on the dirt bike riding around.
Speedy recovery
@midnightmoon05 Yes. The left one was done almost 5 years ago. Now I am symmetrical.
Definitely the spaghetti !! In high school we couldn't wait for it to be spaghetti day.
It was so tasty and delicious. It tasted like no other spaghetti 🍝 we've had before.
I'm pretty sure that they made it from scratch, but instead of serving it when all of the ingredients were cooked, then they would add cheese 🧀 and then bake it until the cheese was all melted through out it.
They also had the BEST giant cookies that were to die for.
Peanut butter, butter cookies, oatmeal cookies and chocolate chip (your favorite 😂😂). They were at least 10 inches in circumference. Yummy! 😋
The Thursday meal was always goated, I will miss it since I am soon going to finish high school.
In morning they would give us strawberry or butterscotch milkshake or orange or mixed fruit juice. Breakfast would be soggy but extremely savory and succulent Dhokla with Mint Sauce.
Lunch would be veggies fries (potatoes, beans, carrots), butter paneer (butter chicken but with cottage cheese cubes), thick creamy dal tadka, rice and roti, jalebi for dessert.
Snack that day would be cinnamon donut or potato cutlet or chocolate bread with nutella.
I never missed a Thursday ever.
Did they give you guys the juice for a taste test? lol. Why even bother giving at that point?
In my school you can get as many refills as you want, for drinks or breakfast or lunch or snack as long as they don't run out of stock and you are asking within the breakfast hour or lunch hour. If you have good connection with the cafeteria workers like me, they will whip out a quick yum snack any time you want.
For me it was the square pizza day, without a doubt 🍕
The crust was kind of cardboard, the cheese a bit plasticky, but somehow the salty sauce and the crispy edges made it magical. It always smelled like pure happiness. I remember trading my dessert just to get a second slice and eating it with way too much red pepper flakes like a tiny pizza snob in training 😄

We had no warm food, we had fresh bakery products, several wafers and bars, yoghurts, some fruits…
Couldn’t tell you, those memories are too hazy now. I remember regularly buying a bar of Ritter Sport chocolate on my way to school, though.
sounds a lot healthier than most American school lunches. we'd have frozen pizzas, cheesesteaks, mac and cheese, etc... and of course none of it was even relatively fresh. either frozen foods or highly processed
Yeah. We only had one fat kid in the whole class level (~100 children).
Used to make these chocolate chip cookies the size of your hand with fingers stretched out that would come out of the oven at 10:25am every morning and if you were down there at 10:30 at the back door and the lunch lady liked you you could buy them fresh out of the oven. First break was 10:45 so I always had a pee break everyday at the time so frequently that other students would lie to teachers saying I had pee problems as a like medical thing so they would let me go and I could grab cookies for myself and my cohorts.
In high school, everyone loved the mashed potatoes! I don't know why they were so much better than any others - they just were. During spirit weeks, the lunch ladies would color them our school colors.
In addition to the typical lunches as mentioned above, we also had a sandwich stand. You could get deli sandwiches custome made with your choice of bread. It was very popular.
From elementary to high school, I haven't seen or heard of any burger, tacos, pizzas or hot dogs in school canteens. They would most likely be considered junk food violating nutritional regulations. Regulations because school canteens here are under the authority of either city councils or regions, this is political.
That being said, I don't remember liking anything but french fries back then 😂
It's also likely tacos didn't even exist, in fact I started hearing of tacos as street food in the 2010s or something
I guess? I don't know, regulating menus for kids seems just normal to me lol, I'm obviously biased, these regs are so hard coded, I wouldn't even think about questioning them
... Regulation-free when you hit college though, school canteens/cafeterias there offer balanced menus as well as totally unbalanced ones.
They used to make peach cobbler that to this day I've never seen topped. It was so fucking good it's not even funny. I used to think that the lady in charge of the food was just deciding to make a recipe she knew randomly because most of the other food was stuff that obviously came out of a box 😂
Monday’s Mystery Meat was always something & that always lead into Taco Tuesday & Whatever Wednesday. Thursday was pizza day, Friday was Freaky Friday & you didn’t dare to eat in the cafeteria & if you did your asshole was hurting that weekend.
Taco’s were always good & sometimes I had a peanut butter & jelly sandwich. Nowadays from what I understand peanut butter & jelly sandwiches are banned because the jokers today are allergic to every flocking thing.
This is funny because I remember everything and I cannot think of one food that I got in school. I remember there used to be one good day but I forget what it was. But I think you're right there had to be hot dog corndog or a taco
But a lot of times my cousin and I would run over to my aunt's house because she lived just right around the corner
That's kind of weird. I don't remember any type of food at school. Except for the milk , I used to love the milk
My school didn't have a cafeteria like the USA does, it was mostly pre-made stuff but they did do some great wedges with sour cream and sweet chilli.
At my intermediate school youd put in an order for what you want and it would arrive to your classroom at lunch time Spaghetti (from a can) and cheese on toast was a pretty big hit
In elementary school we had an all you can eat salad bar for like $3. In middle school we had taco bell (Chilitos, Beef Burritos, and Bean Burritos) and either cheese or pepperoni pizza from a local pizza shop. In High School, mainly just pizza from the same local pizza shop.
The cafeteria food in my high school wasn't delicious.
When I had to settle for something in line, I'll just take mac & cheese or pizza even if I didn't really like 'em.
Quite often, I brought somethings from home.
I didn't have a cafeteria at my elementary school, only boxed lunches, in junior high I seem to remember I was partial to the cheeseburgers, but even those were pretty bad and also the meat looked rather pale, in high school I think there was pizza but it was really really cheap, I remember I'd just get a lot of salad toppings, especially the chickpeas.
Lol! I'm the weird girl that loved the cheese sandwiches they made out of that government cheese you can't seem to find anywhere else. (But at least it didn't give me the"fluffs" 🤣)
The only things I really enjoyed from the school. cafeteria was a fresh sliced and buttered kaiser, the hot dogs, pizza when they had it, mashed potatos with gravy, the butterscotch pudding and ice cream sandwichs with chocolate wafers on yhe outside.
our best growing up was cheese steaks and tator tots or french fries. that's the one i remember being a must buy.
i can never figure out what to make of these AI answers to purely human experiences. it's funny to even read the responses of a computer trying to sound and relay a 100% human thing
I don’t personally know because i never ate lunch at skool. It always seemed like everyone else got very excited for the pizza though.
I always liked the corn dogs, and subs. If we knew those were on the menu it was a happy day. The pizza was okay. Spaghetti was always yuck.
it was real good. I would get two lunches and they always have vanilla milkshakes but I wanted chocolate. I didn’t get chocolate until I got into high school I got some spaghetti and lunch with garlic bread
Our burgers were really fairly decent. Lunches were $0.38, yes, thirty-eight cents- 35 + 3 cents for the milk. I would work in the kitchen to get a free lunch and bank my 38 cents each day.
French Fries and Tab. Had to squeeze into those skinny jeans, lol.
The dining hall at my school made really good pizza
I went to boarding school lol
Sloppy Joe day was the best by far. There probably wasn't a whole lot of beef in it, but I remember it being the best day.
The pizza my school had was awesome! The Catholic school next door had some excellent chili on Thursdays. Both schools had access to each other cafeteria.
It was custard with a caramel biscuit or jam tart cake in it.
We had Sodexho-Marriott doing our lunches so all of our food was very good, and not your typical tray full of starch.
"Pizza". Keyword being BEST.
What school cafeterias serve burgers and taco
My college/uni had burgers, but not high school or grade school
Weiner winks (I didn't give them that name. That was the actual name)🤣
Stuffed cheesy bread sticks with marinara dipping sauce. Essentially cheese sticks wrapped in pizza dough then baked to fluffy goodness.
Turkey and Noodles Mashed Potatoes with Gravy Dinner Roll Apple Crisp White or Chocolate Milk
I have no idea. I never ate cafeteria food, thank God.
I didn’t have a cafeteria which is usually a place for freaks to pass time
French toast and you?
When I was young the cafeteria food was pretty terrible and my mom always packed my lunch. When I was in high school I just went home for lunch
Pizza, and chicken tenders and fries. Damn that was so long ago now lol
Yep I see 24 year olds as pretty much kids. Crazy
Ham and mushroom tagliatelle was a hit so was the curry
Maybe the pizza or hot dogs but that’s not saying much because it was still terrible
I carrying the canteen in my bag lol
all of their food was shit.
Turkey gravy over mashed potatoes.
I made my own food.
When I was at school, I had food from home in my bag (usually sandwiches).
Something that isn't international...
It's called manooshé, a rounded dough with thyme mixed with oil on it than it goes to the furnace...
You can make manooshé not only with thyme but you can use cheese instead of thyme too...
Very tasty, it's an authentic traditional breakfast here in my country, if someday you made a trip to my country, i'll invite you to taste both 😊
Lebanon, it's a small country in the middle east 🙂
