I asked her why she does it and she said it's just for fun. I explained that it hurts a lot and she said that is precisely why it's funny.

This is NOT normal. It is cruel and disrespectful, especially because you explicitly told her that it hurts. She should not treat you this way, nor should you allow her to. How could she think it's funny? I think you should tell her to stop throwing things at you, or kicking, punching, hitting, whatever she is doing.

I know that friends will often hit each other playfully, but it doesn't seem like that's what's going on here.

Try standing behind her and pulling her hair really hard so that her whole body moves to where you are. Or, you know how people slap each other on the back in a friendly way sometimes? Try doing that - like really hard - the next time you see her. She'll probably be be like, "Whoa! What'd you do that for?" Then explain.
