Girls - can you help me figure out why this girl acts so strangely around me?

A girl in my class, who I am admittedly interested in, is doing the following:

She can initiate conversation with everyone else in our class but me. Regardless if it's a guy or a girl, she can initiate conversation with them AND seems to be able to keep it going.

She will occasionally initiate SMALL conversation with me BUT won't be able to keep it up. I've also tried initiating conversation with her but she seems to be unable or unwilling to keep it going for long.

I've caught her staring multiple times, in fact in group settings she's often on her phone but I catch her sneaking glances (and maintaining eye contact for a good portion) at me so I stare back when she does.

What's going on here? Is she just not interested or what? I tried joining in on group conversations to make sure it's not awkward or anything mutual friends, and she'll seemingly avoid looking in my general direction at all, sometimes turn half way to me or her back to me but then will still sneak in glances as I converse with others...

Well she may dislike you... But that seems unlikely!! She sounds quite shy and scared to approach you. It's not because you've scared her, but because she doesn't want to say the wrong thing to you. If she's fine with everyone else your obviously special to her. I think she is interested but nervous to approach you. Try to smile at her and whenever you get the chance, chat to her! It doesn't have to be the deepest conversation ever, even if you just ask her how her day is going it shows you care! The more you talk to her, the more confident she will become! I do try to smile and joke around, but it just seems she's REALLY nervous around me! I am running out of ideas haha

Okay so do you recommend I bring down the barrier she has up? I mean trying to converse isn't working so well as of right now! Is there any way to make it less stressful for her?

compliment her and don't put too much pressure on her with too many questions. She probably doesn't want to embarrass herself in front of you! Just be your kind self and show you're interested too and she'll calm down a bit.

Well I would feel uncomfortable flat out asking her to hang out without really knowing each other that well, but that was kind of the point of me trying to converse with her. Do you think that's being a bit too up front to just ask her to hangout like that?

Well I don't know how you're going to get to know her unless your able to have a conversation. And she's to shy to do so.
Maybe ask for her number and tell her your having some trouble with the subject that you have class together in, and someone told you that she understood it really well.
