I am from the US, and I have to say locking arms, just as friends is way more common in Europe . I have had one of my good mate's GF who I get along with really well lock arms while we talk and walk right in front of him. So I think holding hands is far more intimate whereas locking arms could be platonic.

I think locking arms is more for if you are just started dating and you don't really know what the other person is thinking/feeling and you want to play it safe.

But I would prefer hand holding it seems more intimate.
