Sometimes girls just don't know what the other person will be comfortable being called (bæ, babe, baby, honey, etc) so they just use bud. It's friendly, not too serious but it definitely doesn't rule out your chances with that girl.

When I call a guy, "Bud" ... It means I see him the way I see my little brothers... in a loving and motherly way. I don't call many guys, "Bud" ... but when I do, I feel something towards them.. even if it's just a mothers love. :)

Not at all. I call people bubba or bub or bud and some of them I'm into while others I'm not. I don't reserve certain nicknames based on where you sit in my life as a potential interest or not.
