Why do women cross the road to avoid men?

I'm with a friend... we are in no way dressed or look intimidating face wise what so ever. Infact she crossed from about 80 meters away... but it was so obviously done to avoid us. She was an attractive female. I mean me and my friend combined have never cat called or even approached a woman on the streets.. not that they would know that... we are 6'1 and 6'2... so I dunno it can't be us being ugly because she saw us from so far away lol. I'm guessing she/other women anticipate men harassing them? It makes me reluctant to approach women if they don't even want to walk on the same pathway.

Lets say it had nothing to do with us... I'm sure some are going to post stuff like... erm can a woman not cross the road without... fill in the gaps... but we do notice when chilling by his house (near the pavement) women tend to cross right before going past us many times. When I'm on my own it isn't a thing... some women play with their hair when walking past... not sure if they are anticipating me being doing something...

Rapists and thieves usually dress like normal people, you know. They don't *look* like monsters or anything.
Women do this to avoid getting into trouble. And it's funny, because people (a lot of guys especially) always tell us that we need to be on guard and that we shouldn't get ourselves into questionable situations. Or else it's our own fault we got [insert crime here]. Yet when we do take precautions, suddenly guys are offended that we don't trust them, a complete stranger.

Fact is a lot of guys DO catcall or even touch, especially when they've had a few drinks. So if you're out alone, in fairly empty street you don't want to be in situation. Even in though in 9 out 10 cases, even the guys touching are "harmless" beyond that, but you don't want to meet the one guy that isn't

Where I live I have only ever seen someone hoot a horn. I'd say very few guys do but they ones that do will do it a lot... but fair enough... I don't know if catcalling it more of an American thing... in the UK it rarely happens.

well here in Ireland it happens often enough. Not so much in daylight but def at nigh when people go out. And then guys tend to stay in groups which makes it even more intimidating. So as I said, better safe than sorry. Crossing the street is no effort, so why would we not do it?

Yeah at night when people are drunk... and guys are with their mates... not supprised. Also Irish men I think have a culture of being tough/masculine... so doing such things will likely impress friends.

It's better to be safe than sorry. It's not personal, but if you have no intention of interacting with that person it's just easier to just get out the way. You never ever know what could happen. You can't blame someone for being cautious. She probably has no problem with guys but she's just avoiding a potentially dangerous situation.

When it's just me this doesn't seem to happen... maybe a group of guys is seen as more of a threat? I guess they may be worried guys might dare them to do stuff etc...

I think that would be very threatening if you came up to her really quickly. Unless you just said "excuse me, miss?" rather than practically chase her down. That's gonna get you maced in the face.

Yep. Our moms have ingrained it in us to be ever so watchful. Don't take it personally. Guys dont think about it much... And you're above average in height for a guy. Heck, I was raised to never walk near vans or some rapist is going to snatch me up. And I still have that same mindset. Lol. Better to be extra safe than sorry, especially for above average looking women.

It sounds like she was by herself, right? Well, you weren't. A single man is threatening enough, but if two guys wanted to hurt her, there's nothing she could do. She was just trying to be safe.

Fair enough. From our perspective it's weird because we probably wouldn't risk asking for her number or something yet alone harass etc... but I guess the guys who do (perhaps very few)... do it to a lot of attractive women.
