What does it mean when a girl hugs you randomly?

So my friend just comes up to me and hugs me? And then she starts talking about her boyfriend saying how he’s taking the relationship too fast which I didn’t really care about.

Mhrm I'm thinking of 3 scenarios;

1. If you know her for a really long time or she appreciates you as a good friend, in my experience it could be just friendship as well.

2. She's just hopping from guy to guy and flirting with them, I know some girls who do this stuff. They don't actually really mean what they're doing, they just want attention or are bored.

3. She likes you (doesn't mean immediately she loves you!).

So this friend of mine has a boyfriend however before she hugged me he looked real sad. Then after she was delighted to see me following the hug.
Maybe she was happy to see me?

Means she likes attention, period. And that she considers you, in at least some small way, her fall back guy-- something which I wouldn't blame you for being bothered by.

I’ve known her for a whole year now.
Before she hugged me she seemed kind of glum, and then after she saw me and ran towards me to give me the warm hug.

That’s actually really sweet. That means seeing you picked up her mood enough for her to have the energy to give you that hug. It means you’re someone who makes her happy.

I wanted to be with her but she now has a boyfriend and she tells me stuff about him which I don’t really care about.
I would like to think of myself as a person who makes her happy and that makes me feel good

She definitely likes you. I don't know if she “like likes” you or just cherishes you as a friend, but you’re definitely someone she’s glad to have in her life.

I care about her relationship in the sense that I want her to be happy and stable.
I said that because I yearned to be with her however I ended up in the friendzone.

So it's just bit of envy? If that's the case try to move on. The hugs are a part of he friendship vocabulary not sexual/romantic.

Also this only applies if you're being serious about the friendzone. That's just something that people blame their own romantic failures. I presume that their relationship started after you decided you like this woman. A little disappointed in yourself for not getting the girl sooner?
